Poll the audience

I have been thinking over the last few weeks that I want to write something. I'm not sure what, but I feel like I have something to say. I have toyed with the idea for the last few years, but these past few months of working a dead end job has left my mind somewhat idle and I feel like I want to do something mentally productive. Although I read a lot of romance novels, I just want to write something, not romance. You are supposed to write what you know and that is certainly not something I know. Maybe something more autobiographical. I'm not sure. Any ideas?

I think you'd be good at writing humor, because you're so funny. Maybe even satire. Or did you want to write something serious?

I was thinking along the lines of humor, maybe essay form. Kind of like David Sedaris or Chelsea Handler (My Horizontal Life - a must read)

Definitely humor!

Katie - why don't you just sit down and see what comes out instead of going in with a plan? Sounds weird but you never know what might emerge!

I don't care what you say about romance... you would write one hell of a romance novel... you could crank that thing out... Do it.

P.S. I know you and I know that you would write a hell of a romance... besides, don't you already have your characters and plot figured out?

I did have something sketched out a few years ago, but nothing ever came of it.

Nalini - I think your idea definitely has merit...and considering you're an author it has even more merit!

I think even if you don't think romance is what you want to write, it could be a good exercise just to "limber up." Know what I mean? Not to put down romance novels but maybe it would flow freely?

And they don't have to be based on your personal experience... that's why it's called fiction!

Good thing about not basing it on a personal experience. I guess if I was interested in writing a haiku or something...
