Poll the audience: Weddings

I went to a shower Saturday night and I had a good time partly because it was not one of those "stuffy" teas or whatnot. I realize that I am not the most sentimental or girly person and I tend to think that a lot of the stuff that goes on with weddings is silly. Since my brother is getting married in less than a year, I will have to be an active participant in a much of this craziness. Apparently, some people like this stuff and I really want to know where people stand on weddings and the accompanying hoopla. From what I have already written you may have guessed that my idea of the perfect wedding is something akin to a keg party. I figure if I ever get married I'll have three showers: a pajama shower (everyone gets to wear p.j.'s and gives me whatever they want), a beer shower (super casual and everyone has to give me something related to the brew), and a NASCAR shower (everyone has to wear something that relates to NASCAR - excluding Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, the Busch brothers, Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards, etc. - and give me something related to Dale Jr.). My "dress" will probably be track pants and a t-shirt, all my bridesmaids will wear what they want. All of this is to be followed by a really big party and a honeymoon in Hawaii.

With that being said, what do you think about weddings?

Most weddings, I find, are a general dissappointment.

Weddings are generally a scam for lots of other people to make money. I have been interning in a special events department at a mediocre museum all summer. Their rates and terms are a total rip off. It costs $5,000 for 4 hours and you have to use their sucky caterer who is way over-priced.

I say screw tradition and do whatever the hell you want. I know I will.

I think weddings have gotten way out of hand!

The hoopla is insane. One sedate shower should be enough. I think your wedding should cost LESS than your first home.

Amen. I think your wedding should cost less than a dependable car.

I have to admit, there is a part of me that wishes I liked wedding stuff, but I just don't. I'm just not a girly girl, but that's okay. We need all sorts of people, right?

I'm a girly girl and I have to say that I love weddings. So much so that I started my own wedding book sometime in high school. I didn't even look at it when I was planning my wedding, but it didn't matter, I already knew everything I wanted. I loved my dress, the flowers, the cake, and being the center of attention. I really loved with the reception, complete with drinking, dancing, and the bouquet toss.
That being said, wedding are WAY overpriced. I totally agree that they should cost less than a house and a reliable car.
Oh yeah, and many, many boring, stuffy showers? Not fun! I agree with the party ideas.

I'm so proud--my party got a blog shoutout! I"m glad you had a good time--I hate stuffy teas and don't know who has a good time at them. All parties at my house will include beer!

I am currently planning a wedding (April 14) and it is a TOTAL waste of money. I couldn't see it at first and insisted that we have one. Dave wanted to elope. I wish he had pushed harder for that now. It is a constant fight with everyone-- who to invite being the biggest problem with our families. I am over budget (shock-shock). All of the places that we looked at were around $5000 to rent and you are locked in to using their caterer-- and sometimes your cake as well.

The only thing that feels like it is "mine" and "all about me" is my dress, even though this is supposed to be "my day".

I say buy a dress (or outfit) that you like and makes you feel great and ELOPE.

We should have ran and spent the money, that we are wasting on a wedding that no one will really remember, on us in Italy, but I had to be a girly idiot...
