Many movies

Over the course of the holidays I saw quite a number of movies...

True Grit, 2010: A-
True Grit, 1969: B+
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1: B+ (lower grade because I wanted to see both parts at once)
Inception: A-
The Big Lebowski: A (first time I saw it all the way through. The Dude also inspired me to enjoy a few White Russians - yum)
The Ladies in Lavender: B
Young Victoria: A
The King's Speech: A, someone give Colin Firth an Oscar already!

All in all a worthy movie watching time was had :)

Southern Gothic

At the beginning of December I visited my family in Louisiana and learned about family stories that I had never heard and it has inspired me to think about writing in a more organized and professional manner. There is some true humor and tragedy in my family history and I think I would like to write something inspired by these accounts. I'm by no means a writer, but I have felt I have a story to tell for a while. This blog was originally part of this feeling, but I think I want to step it up a bit. Thoughts? (assuming anyone reads this...)

how low can you go?

I was just reading a little more about the Drew Peterson case - you know, the scumbag police officer who is accused of killing his third and fourth wives. Well, it has got me wondering...what do these women see in him? When he was arrested for killing his third wife they showed a picture of his current fiancée and she is cute and really young. Is it some sort of daddy complex? Are they so lacking in self esteem that some guy in his 50s (to your early 20s) seems like a prime catch? Oh and did I mention that his third wife "accidentally" drowned in a bathtub with no water and his fourth wife suddenly up and left leaving her two kids behind? Where do I sign up for Mr. Right? Clearly, I have been looking in the wrong places for a significant other. I need to start scouring the newspapers for men under a cloud of suspicion for killing their domestic partners. I am just too picky I guess. I so find felonies unattractive.

Baffling

Hanging around my family reminds me that there is a strong contingent of people that really loathe Obama. Most of my friends (except you, AEC) are pretty big supporters of our president and breathed a sigh of relief when he won the election. I had to listen to several family members discuss how he is a Socialist and he is trying to tax people to death and all of those wonderfully enlightening things that Fox News (Fair and Balanced, people - if you say it, it's got to be true) spouts off about. One of my favorite family members also said that like her granddaughter, I will change my mind when I "grow up." Talk about mixed messages. Everyone says that I need to be more responsible now that I have hit 30 and that all my good years are behind me (usually from the people younger than me) and now I hear that I am still waiting to grow up. I tried to be nice - since she is a favorite - and noted that I am eight years older than her granddaughter and I can think for myself. Aaargghh.

Treating myself

I have been on quite the shopping extravaganza the last few days...I got my haircut and colored ($135) got Teddy's haircut ($48 - can you believe that!) and I bought an iPhone! I was going to be sensible and not succumb to the need boiling inside of me for something to replace my iTouch, but when I didn't get anywhere with VERIZON WIRELESS again I decided to just throw in the towel and head for greener pastures. Luckily for me, the AT&T store was just a few paces down the road and I was steamed enough to just throw caution to the wind and buy one. As you have probably already imagined....I love it. I can't wait to take it home and sync it with my computer. (I'm in Nashville at the moment) Such a nerd. I will be keeping this one with me at all times and I will have a net tracker on the b*tch to make sure no one runs off with it!

Happy Memorial Day and I hope everyone is enjoying a relaxing few days off from work!

Oh, Yes, Hugh Jackman

This past weekend I went to see Wolverine with the roommie. I have wanted to see it ever since I saw the trailer where he emerges from the water all sorts of naked and muscle-y. The movie was full of eye candy and it didn't disappoint. In terms of a storyline it was no Iron Man and certainly no Dark Knight. That's okay, I wasn't really expecting a cinematic masterpiece. I think the next movie I am going to see is Star Trek. I believe hell hath frozen over because I would never have predicted that I would have an interest in anything having to do with Spock or Kirk. Just not my thing. My first cousins on my mom's side are big Trekkies and I could never understand it. The unattractive outfits, the elf ears, the strange hand gesture that I have to concentrate to make...eh, I never really got it. Now that Chris Pine has come on the scene, I believe I can get on board. He is one fine looking gentleman. I would love to be in a Hugh Jackman/Chris Pine sandwich. The only problem with that would be the gay vibe. I mean, would they start hooking up with each other? Not cool. Maybe I should just look at them as two separate pieces of cake that need to be consumed on different days. Hmmm. Ponder, ponder, ponder.

Yes, people, this is what I think about.

Here are the many things

That I could give a flying f*ck about

Rhianna and Chris Brown - two people who are too young with too much money

Swine Flu - if it gets you it gets you

Lindsay Lohan - she's just sad and lost

People complaining about taxes - I would rather my tax money go to "socialist" causes than a pointless war without an end

American Idol - Please, Jesus, make it stop. It is like a bad penny. It just keeps coming back

Twitter - get on it or don't, but quit talking about it like it is the second coming

Alright, I am feeling a bit like Eeyore, so I best get myself to bed.

Best Business Practices

About a week and a half ago I dropped my phone on the pavement. It was open at the time and I looked it over and it seemed fine. I dialed my brother's number and put the phone to my ear, but I didn't hear anything. It soon dawned on me that something was wrong with the phone. After a little experimentation, I realized the phone would only work on speakerphone. Now almost 14 days later it continues to do this, but intermittently. Sometimes it works like it should and sometimes not, but there is no predicting. I took the phone to VERIZON WIRELESS and the lady was very nice and suggested that the problem could be that I hadn't updated my phone and the data was outdated. I tried to explain that it wasn't a data issue but a mechanical one. She said that it didn't really matter. I still had to do the update and needed to demonstrate what was wrong with the phone. Remember the intermittent part? Um, yeah. A little hard to predict when the phone will work or won't. My option? Nothing. She told me that they couldn't replace, repair, or generally do anything until I am due to get a new phone in November. NOVEMBER. I kindly asked her when my prison sentence would be up with VERIZON WIRELESS (and then I speculated that 2012 sounded about right). As it turns out I will be paroled in March but if I want to get out of my contract before that they will expect me to pay a penalty of approximately $34,000,000 - give or take a few zeros. So if I talk to any of you on the phone just remember that the conversation is potentially being monitored by anyone that happens to be in the vicinity.

Seriously?

If you are a facebook friend, you have probably already seen this, but my beloved iPod Touch was absconded with. Someone stole it. I am so f*cking mad, it is unreal. I think I know who did it, too. There were these two kids in the department I work in at the library and I left my desk and when I came back it was gone. You know what makes me so mad about this whole thing, though? I worked for that piece of technology. I spent my money on it and now it is gone. I follow all the rules and then some worthless person walks off with MY property. WTF? I changed my pw on gmail and on facebook, so hopefully they won't be able to access my personal info. I hope. I hope they are playing with the motherf*cker and they wander into traffic. So now I have to decide if I am going to buy another one. Probably. It's like someone cut off my reliable connection to heroin. Sh*t.

People, let me tell you about my best friend...

So the trouble with the title of this blog is that I don't have one. Now that is not to say that don't have really good friends, but they all have someone else. For the last year or so I have been feeling quite lonely. It is what finally encouraged me to do the whole online dating thing and just generally bitch about my state of affairs - or lack there of. Tonight I was walking Teddy and just pondering the whole subject and I realized that I have always had a best friend. Someone that I spent quite a lot of time with and we just hung out all the time. This gets to the tricky part of this post. I am not going to name names, but if you think part of this post is about you you're probably right. So, to begin, let's trace the trajectory of my bfs over the last three decades. I had one main bestie from early childhood to high school. There were other people who I was very close to at the time as well, but one person in particular. Off to college - freshman year I had a new bestie, sophomore and junior year I had another, senior year up to about a year or two ago I had another bff. Now, everyone has moved on to better, more fulfilling things and I am still here. It makes me sad. I don't know how to go from here. Oh I still have some great people in my life, but the circle keeps shrinking and it feels like I'm truly going to be alone. I can't tell you how depressing that is. I just don't know what to do. I wish I could go back in time and prepare my 15, or 20, or 25 year old self for this because it sucks. I always feared being alone and I guess that was a self-fulfilling prophecy, huh? Ain't it a bitch.

Two posts within one week? No!

Back from the wedding. Things were interesting to say the least. A little drama (alright, a lot!) but what weddings don't have that? I only have one wedding left for the next several months. That one is in D.C. and I'll get to see several friends! Yay!

Tonight's post is regarding a show I was sucked into watching tonight..."I Didn't Know I was Pregnant!" on the beloved (and always classy - Toddlers and Tiaras anyone?) TLC. Each episode is an hour of extreme idiocy. Most of the lovely young ladies I saw were from the South - Cheers to us! Generally while they were unknowingly hatching a baby they were off smoking and drinking and doing God knows what else. Several of the babies were delivered directly into toilets. Seriously. Can you imagine? "Excuse me, I need to use the bathroom. I'll be right back. Oh My God! How did THAT get there?" I found the woman who was pregnant with twins to be the most baffling. She claims that she was probably around 130 pounds at the time (and she is 6'0"), which I find highly unlikely because she is quite the sturdy looking fellow, er, lady, these days. Also, how do you not notice you are lugging around two humans at once? Oh, the thought that these people wander the earth without some sort of guardians or helmets.

The diet from hell

Hi All. Once again it has been too long. Life has been interesting and busy as of late, but in a good way. The more interesting news is the new eating plan the roommie and I have embarked on. I was watching Oprah the other day and Dr. Oz did a story on Calorie Restriction. Basically, the idea of this meal plan is to feed your body as efficiently as possible and it is supposed to maximize your health and help you live longer.

Here is the truth. That all may be true, but as I have recently found out life is not all that fun without sugar, bread, salt, and alcohol. This past weekend I reflected on how hungry I was and how miserable that made me. I will grudgingly admit that I am feeling pretty good physically. Based on how I feel, I have determined I might have a slight food allergy. I feel more rejuvenated and just clearer. Don't get me wrong I am still hungry. Let me give you some examples of what we are eating...

lots of leafy green veggies, particularly spinach
tons of broccoli and cauliflower
lean protein like chicken and turkey
egg whites
yogurt
lentil soup
nuts (of which I generally despise)
1 or 2 tbl of olive oil a day - you still need to ingest fats
protein bars and protein powders (mixed in food to make them quite inedible)
fruit (I had some fantastic dried mango today that was the best thing I have eaten on this diet)

Let me repeat, there is no candy or other sweets on this diet. I am currently not salting my food - which is a huge challenge for me. Also, not drinking, but that's ok I would rather eat my calories than drink them.

So...where do we go from here?
Well, to me, this is not a sustainable way to eat. I feel like I could forage in the woods and find more delicious things to eat. This weekend Peyton is getting married and I plan on enjoying the food available. I pity anyone that steps in front of me at the buffet line at the rehearsal dinner - people could be hurt. After we return home I think I will be doing WW points. It is an easy plan to follow and it is bound to feel downright luxurious compared to the prison food I am currently 'enjoying.'

The roommie has hidden the scale from me, so I have no idea if I have lost weight or not. If I haven't lost weight...well, hell hath no fury...

I'll give you an update soon (I know, I know, you've heard that, but I mean it this time...)

I have good intentions...

I really do mean to post more, but life seems to get in the way.

I continue to settle into the new job. I think I am having the normal feelings anyone else has where they wonder if they are ready for the responsibility. I think I have them more because I happened to be in the right place at the right time and everyone knows it. It's not my fault my boss decided to retire early, but I think I can do this job and not make people miserable while I am at it. My personal life has taken a decidedly backseat position to everything else. I feel like I don't have nearly as much "laying about" time. You know how I love to sit on a couch and watch some TiVo. Sometimes I get home and can only watch one or two programs and then it is off to bed. What happened to the Katie of years before? I guess she got a lot more sh*t to do. What about everyone else out there? Peyton is getting married and we are having a little get together at the G-unit mansion in a few weeks so that should be fun. My old roommate from college is getting married in May so that is another wedding I will be attending. Woo. Hoo. That's about it. Hope all is well out in the virtual world!

Two movies and other stuff

Today I got off early from work and decided to see a movie on my own. This was only the third movie I've ever seen by myself. So what did I see on such a momentous event? Paul Blart: Mall Cop. I was a little bit ashamed of going to see this movie, but none of my friends would see it with me so I went alone. Review? Eh. Not so good although there were some funny parts. Later on tonight I went to see another movie with the roommie. We chose Slumdog Millionaire. Awesome movie!! You should definitely go see it. It was really compelling. The only other Oscar nominated movie I have seen was The Wrestler. It was also really good, but I think Slumdog edged it. I still think Mickey Rourke deserves the best actor Oscar.
On to other topics, I've been feeling a bit blah as of late. My life is just a little boring right now. It definitely has an impact on how I feel about other aspects of my life. I hate ask for excitement because then I will probably regret it, but I need something to break up the monotony. Oh well.

Knowing what you're worth

So, as I have mentioned before I have a new job. This new job didn't become official until Friday, but the part I am quite proud of is how I handled the income aspect. A few days earlier my boss told me what the salary was going to be (I received a bump when I took the temporary position) and I will admit I thought it would be a little more. I had a night to mull it over before we talked about it seriously and when I met with her the next day I asked for more money. The Katie from 6 months ago would never have done that, but I wanted to be true to myself so we negotiated for more money. I have to admit I am quite proud of myself. I feel like am more self assured when it comes to my career and that is good. It makes it easier to be decisive and to have people respect you. I never thought I would be like this, but I'm glad I am!

2009 - busy,busy,busy

So, the year has already been busy...as you can tell from the title. I have been settling in with the new job and trying to be a good and fair boss. I have also tried putting myself out there in terms of dating and I actually went on a date last week. This is the point where I would like to tell you we hit it off, but then I would have to worry about growing a nose the size of pinochio's... Let's just say it was interesting and will make a good story for years to come. I am not off the dating wagon, but I need a little time to regroup and plan my future strategy. I guess the most exciting thing that has entered my life in recent weeks is the iPod touch which I am currently posting from. It is so sweet. Loving it - you have to get one!! Alright so it is a quick post, but I wanted to drop by and say 'hey.' So, 'hey'. :)

Back in the 'Ham

I came home today. I decided to go ahead and get back to the apartment and not put it off. Last year I kept putting it off and spent several extra days at home because I was trying to avoid work. Not this year, I like my job more and life seems to be a little more enjoyable. It's late, but it is officially New Year's Eve and it makes me look back at 2008. Let's see...this is what happened over the course of the year...

I went through three coworkers and that was a bit challenging.

I also experienced a time when I thought I would leave my job and look for something else

I seriously thought about moving - particularly around the time I wanted to leave my job

I turned 30

I survived a family vacation

I got a new job

I made some positive changes in my personal life

I made some new friends

All in all, 2008 was good for me. I know it wasn't for everyone, but I am trying to be happy for myself. I wish everyone an awesome 2009!

Awww...

Thanks for the welcome back! Glad to see some people like to hear what's up with me. SGM - you are right, my enthusiasm was a little lacking. I think it is because I am still on vacay and thinking about being more motivated and focused isn't where I am right now. I do have to say that I have discovered a new addiction to add to my lack of motivation:

Wii. Seriously, I have played more Wii in the past three days than I have in total since they came out. I gave one to my brother and sister-in-law for Christmas and now I am totally envious. I was at Ashley's house earlier and we played a little guitar hero (Ashley, you just need to be more patient and not give up mid song!). I also did a little Wii bowling earlier this evening at my bro's house. The roommie has discussed getting one and I am all over that. So much fun!! I actually broke a sweat boxing the sister-in-law.

Thoughts on Wiis?

Goodness, it's been a while

Hello all (I am, of course, referring to that one person who is actually reading this out there), as you may have noticed I haven't been very diligent about ye ole blog. I guess I've just been busy. I miss it, though. Life is pretty much the same. I have been adjusting to the new job and feeling a little more grown up. Now I need to get all my other ducks in a row. I am seriously thinking about looking for a more permanent residence (a little tired of apartment living - although I love the roommie). This will require more financial planning, which makes my financial planner a good investment. I also need to get a handle on the whole health thing and try to be more conscious of what goes in my body. Lastly, the same old same old - see what's going on in the relationship with a male department. I'll let you know if I make progress.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas!!

Here's the Story....

Alright, so I said that there were major changes in the works. Let me review:

In the past month or so, I have...

Been to Las Vegas, Boca Raton, Miami, and Nashville

Someone that I know who I am quite fond of has been diagnosed with cancer. He is currently receiving treatment and I hope that you pray for him

I am probably being promoted at my job. Perhaps temporarily or it could be permanent. There will definitely be a probationary period, but it would mean I would be the boss for at least 3 months. Like the boss boss.

Vegas was awesome. The Beatles show was great and if you ever have a chance you should go.

Florida with the family was challenging. Spending that much time with family is always challenging. I did come home with a killer tan.

I am currently in Nashville for a work conference.

Life is exciting. I will probably post more tomorrow. Thanks for sticking with me

4 Days Shy of a Month

The computer is broken again.

So much has happened.

Lives are in the balance (seriously)

Life changes are happening (seriously)

Stay tuned

Down to the wire

So 30 is literally right around the corner. I will turn the big 3-0 in five days. It doesn't feel like I have been on this earth for 30 years. That is a really long time. I was born when the Bee-Gees were popular. I am old enough to remember the Challenger exlposion. People tight rolled their jeans when I was in grade school. Just writing this makes me feel quite ancient. Strangely, someone asked me if I was going to turn over a new leaf for my birthday. What? Why? New leaf? I guess. I'm not crazy about the current side of my leaf, but I am certainly not planning on turning a leaf while I'm in Vegas. I imagine that my leaf from Las Vegas is going to look a little worse for wear. It's not a great birthday until you shave off a few future birthdays.

A Question for the masses

Hey folks. I have an interesting query that I heard today from an aquaintence. So, this person recently had "relations" with a guy and it turns out he was packing...if you get what I mean. So she thinks that she may have bruised her lady parts during their act (specifically the cervix?). I think that's what she thinks it is. So here's the question (actually questions):

A. has this ever happened to you?
B. Will it build up some sort of callous?
C. Could this cause some sort of medical problem?

I will have you know that B. is something she really wanted to know. I have never really had this experience so I thought I would open it up to the world wide web.

Thoughts? Anyone? Anyone?

A word about the previous post

Here's the thing. A dear friend was wrongfully fired...via voicemail from this establishment. I am not going to get into particulars, but the whole thing angers me to no end. Here's something you should know about me. I take it very personally when people mess with my friends. I love them and they deserve the best. With this in mind, I am cannot frequent a business that has so clearly lost it's path. Also, just in case you are of a skeptical nature, it truly was a firing that was not warranted. I was a witness to a lot of what led up to it. Some people choose to be cowards in their everyday life. This is one of those times. I do believe in karma and that's what comforts me about the situation. The friend will land on her feet. Oh, and I quit, too.

If you are...

Going to have a vanity license plate then it should make sense. I was behind a truck the other day and it was a University of Alabama tag and the letters were "RBLKWD"

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? I just don't know.

Note to Self

It turns out that cats do NOT enjoy wearing a dog collar just below their front paws and put on a leash. Apparently, when you do this they will jump around like a show-monkey. It also turns out that you might laugh so hard you have an aneurysm.

Vegas, Baby

I am leaving for Las Vegas on October 2nd. My companion for this trip is the roommie, Sara. For those of you who have provided me excuses for why you can't go to on the birthday extravaganza...then I provide Exibit A. I have lots of plans for my three nights and four days and I can't wait. I am definitely going to see The Thunder From Down Under and the restaurant Bouchon. Other than that, things are pretty much in the air!!

I would like to say

That I had a much improved day. I would like to say that. Unfortunately, it turns out that today was not better. On my way to work, my car was making a strange noise but I ignored it and it went away. About ten minutes later, I much louder noise and the car started driving funny and I realized that I had a flat tire. Luckily, I wasn't very far from a large parking lot. I called AAA and they came out and had me back on the road in less than an hour. My day before was such crap, this whole thing didn't really phase me. Of course, my philosophical point of view changed once I realized that after buying two new tires (apparently, another one was pretty worn down) I was going to be out $353. I'll admit that I had a little pity party and cried for a couple of minutes in the car on the way back to work. After getting myself under control - after all - as a particularly compassionate person told me yesterday "crying doesn't fix anything."

Ironically enough, while I was driving to work, before the tire went, I was singing along to the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want"

I'm about to have an old person moment

the picture has nothing to do with this, but I looked up "angry muppets" and this is something I found and it made me laugh. I need a laugh

Although I consider myself fairly young...I am about to have one of "those kids today" rants.

Surprisingly this "story" could be about someone that is several years older than I am...but here it is...

(the following should be read with a sarcastic tone - just a suggestion)
Let's say (hypothetically) that someone you depend on at work or at home or childcare or something similar up an disappeared. Not the scary kind of disappear, but the "peace out, see ya!" kind of way. Let's say this person didn't give you any personal notice. Perhaps they informed you via a letter, or email, or text message. Definitely something that didn't require any kind of human interaction. Let's say that there was no notice. No two weeks, no day, no hour notice. Okay, keep up with me here...Let's say that said person left because she wanted to join up with a campaign of sorts. Maybe political. Maybe not. And that's it. No sorry, no I hate that this may inconvenience you in a major way. Just I'm leaving, I've decided to do this. I've already left.

I imagine that the person this happened to would be really irritated. Maybe even mad. I don't know. I would certainly hate to be that person.

You gotta know when to fold 'em

We are certainly watching the news about the hurricane down here. All my family, with the exception of my dad and brother, live in Louisiana. They rebuilt after Katrina, but they left before the storm. I just read this article on cnn.com and it frustrates me. First off, the title is inaccurate. They can leave, they just choose not to. There are plenty of free ways to get out of the city. The guy who is a busboy? Um, I might be naive, but this is not exactly a New Orleans only job. The woman who doesn't want to sit in her car with her dogs is just ridiculous. How is she going to feel if her home is flooded and she can't keep them safe? My family is out and north and I hope these people make the wise decision to get out as well.

FYI

I bought tomatoes this morning from the farmer's market and they are the most beautiful, delicious, economical tomatoes that I have ever had. To accompany the fresh produce, I baked some bacon. Yes, baked. If you haven't done this then I suggest you do so. You lay it out on a cookie sheet and bake it for 15-20 min. at 400 degrees. It is just as crispy as traditionally cooked bacon without all the mess and risk of injury (from burning yourself from splatters). A little Dukes mayo, tomatoes and bacon and you have yourself THE perfect sandwich. Oh, and add a little salt and pepper. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM-mmmmmmmmm.

Financial Planning

How Depressing. It seems like the more I make the more I spend. Actually, it doesn't "seem" that way, it is that way. I just need to take my head out of the sand and do the things I need to do to make sure that I'm not living in a Kenmore box when I retire.

Born in the sticks

Today, I was watching Sunset Tan - a craptacular "reality" show - and made several observations. Let me set the scene for you: Apparently the Tan Convention '08 was held in Nashville and the gang from Sunset Tan took off in their private plane from L.A. to the boondocks of Nashville. I describe it as the boondocks because of all the bitching and moaning people were doing. They partied at one of the nicest hotels in Nashville and then headed to a ranch (we actually call them farms out this way, but whatever) outside of town. One girl hated it so much because of the bugs and woods and I guess lack of tanning equipment that she had to leave. Based on their assessment I have decided to include details about several things I must have done while I was in Nashville last week (based on the country living that is to be had there).

Once arriving at the homestead I greeted Ma and Pa with a hearty hug and a dinner of collards and homemade biscuits. After settin' a spell, I got to a'workin' on my chores and then got straight to bed at 5:30. I got myself out of bed at 4:30 and ....ok. Enough.

The more I listened to these spoiled people bitching and the banjo music playing in the background, the more irritated I got. I have to admit that I don't spend my time just a pickin and a grinnin at home. The funny thing is that I have always considered myself a city girl. I guess I was just raised in the country and didn't know it.

Details on Nashville

I was pretty tired when I got back from Nashville so it has taken me a couple of days to recover.

Let's see, what did I do over the five days?

Well, I got to see Sarah M. who I mentioned in the earlier post about Nashville. It had been about 5 or 6 years since I saw Sarah and it was great to hang out! The thing about Sarah and about several of my friends is that they are REALLY different from me. Sarah is quieter than me and nicer and more talented (she quilts, people!) and she's good at grammar. I like to think I bring a little humor to the relationship, but overall it is nice to be around people who think about things differently than you do. I think that is what makes us well-rounded people. All right, enough about Sarah :)

I went to a used book store with my friend Ashley's husband. I've known Daniel for about ten years, but this was the first time we have hung out by ourselves. It was different. He can be pretty funny, actually.

I had dinner with Sarah M. and another friend from college Sarah L. (I know many Sarahs) It was fun seeing people you haven't been around in years. It brings up old memories and you get to find out about how other people are doing.

Hmmm, I had lunch with Ashley and her two kids, Colin and Isabella (it is Colin and not Collin, right?). Isabella has me pegged and she is one of the cutest kids I know. She thinks I'm awesome and that means I will buy her stuff just because of this :)

I got my hair chopped off and I am quite pleased with the result.

Several friends and I went to a couple of bars Saturday night and it was fun because it was a group of ladies that I don't get a chance to party with very often. Erin (she is a close family friend who I consider like a sister), Sarah M., and Ashley all got to come out and let loose - well, a little loose. That is where the mechanical bull riding took place. Erin and I were the only ones that literally seized the bull and it was something I would do again. I think I got more loose than the others, but that's not really a surprise to anyone, is it?

Sunday I had dinner at a fantastic new place in Nashville called Miro District with my friend Jenny R. She and her husband used to live in Bham and moved about 6 months ago.

Later, I went to Ashley's and played with Colin and Isabella again. I love it when Isabella shows me her room and all her new toys. She is just too fun. It almost makes me want to have a kid, but then I would have to give it to Ashley to raise.

Got home and watched a little Olympics with Dad and went to bed.

Whoo. I'm tired just typing it!

Before

This is what it looked like starting out...and I threw in one of Teddy putting his head on my shoulder (sweet puppy)

After (it makes sense chronologically)

Well, I rode a mechanical bull during my trip to Nashville and this is the only picture I have of the new doo.

Another embarassing tidbit I shouldn't share

Fabby, the kitty, will sometimes come into my room and try to hide from Teddy so she can pounce on him. Do you know what she uses to hide behind? My bra. It is an undergarment that has some shaping to it so the cups stand up - if tossed on the floor in the right way. The sad part is that it does a pretty good job of hiding her. I guess I should look and see if they have camo versions available in some sort of grey color.

I am greatly saddened

by the news that HP and the Half-Blood Prince has been pushed until July 17th!. WTF? I have to wait almost a year?????!!! I am truly unhappy with the studio. Boo.

Live from Nashville

I'm on a mini vacation for the next few days. I haven't been "home" since February so I am getting a lot of visiting in. I am going to be visiting Sarah M. formerly of Belle of Madison and now of The Nashville Diaries. I want to show her around some of my old stomping grounds and just to hang out. I am also going to try and hang out with a friend from Birmingham who moved up here named Jenny. I'm also going to see Ashley and her babies (one of which is not a baby anymore, but I don't care - she will always be a baby to me). I think we are all going out Saturday night which should be fun since I haven't been out in Nashville in quite a while.

Oooh, and I am also getting my hair cut. I think I might get Sarah to take a before picture because I am so bad at pictures and then I can get an after and show you the (hopefully) awesome and dramatic change!!!!!!!!! BTW, I think I will be donating my hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths because I heard some not so positive things about other options from my friend Susie.

Can you tell I got a little link happy??? I just want to give credit where credit is due!

I thought you knew me

If one more person sends me emails containing false information about Barack Obama I am going to block each and every sender. Do I look like an idiot? Why would people blindly believe this propaganda any more than they believe that Bill Gates is going to give them 1000s of dollars? If you want to learn more about a candidate then try doing a little research on your own and quit relying on emails that have orginated from NO ONE YOU KNOW. And if you are one of the people that is spreading this information...then shame on you.

Once again

A little side note - yesterday 8.08.08 was my three year blogiversary. I've made almost 600 posts in that time. Goodness.

Baking and the Olympics

I'm having a quiet evening at home. I'm baking cupcakes...which I never do and I am watching my tivo'd Olympics! I love it! I can watch all the fun stuff and fast forward through the commercials. I am such a fan of the Olympics. Everytime the national anthem plays I get chill bumps and, dare I say, I'm proud to be an American! I also like the hotties that compete in the games. Hot bodies and national pride, it just doesn't get better than that! I will stop use exclamation marks now!

Thursday, August 07, 2008

P.S.

Here is a picture of me with the new glasses. All I need is the bun and I will complete the library look...check out the long hair. One more week and it will be gone!!

Oh, and this picture is just funny. It's from Jenny's engagement party. That's the roommie on the left...you're welcome Sara....

Considering the life of a hobo

The more you make the more you spend. I shelled out $350 for stuff I needed, but really can't afford. New contacts, glasses and windshield wipers (the wipers cost $63 b/c of a mistake on my part...). The contacts and glasses were needed because I needed to update my prescription and looking at everything in a fuzzy glow isn't a good idea. Blah. I'm not going to discuss money anymore, though.

Speaking of fuzzy

I was watching a tivo'd episode of 20/20 and noticed something quite amusing. When Elizabeth Vargas (anchor of the show) introduced a piece by Barbara Walters the picture on the t.v. was crystal clear. When they panned to Barbara there was a fuzzy glow all around her. I know that it is probably part of her contract that she is seen in the fuzzy glow, but it was a little ridiculous. Everyone knows that Barbara is 113 years old and no amount of fuzzy glow is going to hide that.

Tiny pieces of plastic from nowhere

As any regular reader knows, I have trouble sleeping. Sometimes it is just a problem getting to sleep, sometimes staying asleep, or just being disturbed by things while trying to sleep. Teddy and Fabby do their part in keeping me up, but Fabby has a particular ability to annoy the sh*t out of me in the wee hours of the morn.

Usually it is around 6:30 or 7:30 am and I am sleeping and I become aware of a crinkling noise. It usually takes me a minute or two to figure out that it is Fabby sitting on top of or batting about a piece of plastic. Maybe it is the wrapper off of my water bottle or a bag from Books-A-Million. Regardless of its origin, Fabby thinks it's fabulous. My reaction is varied. Sometimes I just say "quit, Fabby!" which if you have a cat you know has absolutely no effect. If she is within sight, I throw something near her. She usually runs off and returns within moments. Other times I shoo her out of the room and close the door. This does not make her happy and she usually yowls at the door - I am thinking "yowl" is the best word for what sounds come from her mouth. Either way, my sleep is disturbed and I probably lose a good 30 minutes to an hour to this spectacle each time.

My question is where is the plastic comeing from? Sometimes I think she has a stash of plastic hidden and just pulls it out piece by piece just to f*ck with me. You know what the ironic thing is? It's working. She is playing me like a fiddle. I am just a puppet in her plastic filled world.

Stunning. What is wrong with people?

I hoped and prayed

That after seeing this clip, that it would be on YouTube so that I could share it with other people. Please watch before you read the commentary. I really think it adds to the clip, but only after you've seen it.
">

So at the part when she slowly walks in the house, I believe that she is thinking something along the lines of "what the hell has he done now? I will never win the Valentine's Day competition at the Feldman house."
Next, I think when you see her staring up at him while he sings his AWESOME song, she has to be thinking "of all the 80s stars I could have married, I had to pick the one that thinks he can sing."
Lastly, when she starts crying, I know that she is thinking "this is what I have to listen to for the rest of my life? Sweet Jesus, make it stop."

Manswers

I was up pretty late last night because I didn't have to work today. I was flipping through the channels and came up this fine show "Manswers" on Spike Tv. First, I realize that Spike is not catering to women and that their shows are definitely geared toward men, but this show is quite special. I happened to catch the episode of how to tell if a girl is a hooker or a cop. Some of the awesome suggestions were asking the potential hooker/cop if she is interested in nude modeling. This was based on the theory that the hooker would be interested and the cop would not because nude modeling is not a crime. Also, avoid showing the hooker/cop money as this is something you can get arrested for. Of course, I had to consult the website to find out what other manly topics this show is covering. The site states that the premise of the show is to "...answer all of the burning questions men have been dying to ask, but never found socially acceptable." Other awesome Manswers?
1. Best Human Organ to Eat
2. How to Break out of Handcuffs
3. How Tough are Boob implants (seriously, it said "boob")
4. Can You Beat a Breathalyzer (nice.)
5. Make a Stripper Your Lady (personal fave)

Thank Baby Jesus, it's over!

So, Summer Reading ended tonight. It has been about two months of hell. I've been planning since before the new year and now it has come to an end. I feel like it was a success, regardless of the few complaints I got - which isn't bad considering we had over 1000 participants. I have the next two days off and I plan on doing nothing. I am going to lay around and be lazy. I think I might see a movie. Beer is definitely on the menu (actually it is on the menu right now as I write this). Oh, I've also got a cold, but I told someone tonight I'd rather have a cold than have any more Summer Reading.

July

This month has been very long. Work has been extremely trying and I've been working like a dog. Summer Reading just takes it out of me. I think it is the unrelenting nature of the days. There is just something going on all the time and it seems endless. It is certainly something that can make you burn out.

Today I was struck by two conflicting opinions about my Summer Reading program (and it was mine - I planned EVERY activity -all 52 separate events). I had people thank me for everything my staff and I had done over the past couple of months and then I had someone who was quite displeased with my policies. I held firm, and backed up one of the people in my department, but it was still irritating. Here's the thing - we offer everything free of charge and we basically work our asses off to reward children for reading. Don't get me wrong. I want to instill a love of reading in kids. I want them to love it like I do. But I also want parents to take responsibility for their own actions and if they don't pay attention to deadlines, then it's their problem not mine.

Ahh. Now I feel better. Just needed to get it off my chest.

Because it amuses me

I mentioned Roach's List 5 project. Here is a promo (I guess this is what it is)

Monday, July 21, 2008

Did ya miss me?

A coalescence of factors kept me from blogging...namely my computer had no internet and I've been insanely busy at work. I will be blogging with regularity again. I don't really have a topic in mind, but I shall prep you for the next post...

Here's a little homework: click here to find out about a phenomenon sweeping the country

Roach's Project

My dear friend Roach has started an internet project. It is entitled "List 5." The byline is: "A daily subject for you to List 5 of. Add a comment and you could be in the book."

In the about section it states: "List 5 is where I will list a new topic every day for one full year, and compile the answers into a book. It’s an open project so anyone who wants to comment can. The key to is to list just 5 things and only the best ones will make it into the book. Don’t be fooled, coming up with five answers for some questions is harder than it seems.

This is a totally interactive site so you are allowed to answer however you want, including simply listing 5 items; however, what will truly differentiate your answer from others is the personal stories behind them. Why do you feel that way? What made you choose that certain thing? Obviously, my entries will be a little longer than most, and not everyone will feel the need to open up quite as much. It doesn’t matter. Make your list however you are compelled to, since it is yours not mine."

I think it's a pretty awesome idea, so you should check it out and contribute. I have.

I'm still here

It occurs to me that I haven't really posted in over a week and it was not the most positive message, so I wanted to let everyone know that I am doing fine. Things are smoothing out. Work is still stressful, but that isn't going to change. The things with the boy are confusing, but I don't really care anymore so it doesn't matter. I'm sure I will post something interesting soon.

Letting it go

Out of site out of mind. I have removed several posts because I don't want to look at them anymore.

Did you know

That when a child of approximately four years old hops up and down around her mom saying "I gotta pee," "I gotta pee," "I gotta pee" that it is probably a smart idea to listen to the child and rush them to the bathroom. Or, if you want to you can ignore the child and go on doing something else and then you can turn around to see that child peeing on the floor. Have no worries, though. You're friendly children's librarian will clean up the mess while you take care of your child that is now repeating over and over "I'm just so sorry."

It took all I had in me not to tell that mom just what I thought about her. I felt so bad for the little girl. She tried to tell her, but her mom was just so involved in something else she ignored her. How embarrassing for the little girl.

I am shocked and amazed everyday by the lack of consideration by some parents out there. It makes liking my job very difficult at times.

Thursday, June 05, 2008

Oh, dear Lord.

I ran around all day today and was quite busy at work. All this running around made me a bit sweaty and I was looking forward to coming home and enjoying some quality couch time in my comfortable apartment.

Cruel, cruel fate.

I walk in the apartment and it is hot. I get that sinking feeling you get when it dawns on you that your day just got more complicated. The air is out. It is hot. So, so hot. Poor Teddy is wondering around the apartment panting and looking miserable. Basically, he is a dog version of me. Hopefully this will be fixed tomorrow. If not, I will not be spending another night at the un-air conditioned G-Unit Mansion.

Summer Movies so far

My new goal for the next few months is to see as many summer blockbusters as possible (at least the ones that interest me). So I've decided to share my opinions, but no spoilers, with you.

In order of viewing:

Iron Man - *****
I really liked this movie. It had a perfect mix of humor, action, and awesome special effects. Robert Downey, Jr. was really good and kinda hot. I think this is the type of movie that appeals to all people. Very recommended.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - **3/4
Hmmm. Well, this one was a bit of a disappointment. I think the storyline was good to a point and then they lost me. I'm sure most of you have heard what the movie is about, but out of respect for those who aren't in the know, I will just say that I thought they could have done something better. Plus, there was a fight scene in the jungle that was a tad bit ridiculous. I think most people will see it to appease their curiosity and if you've already seen the first three you might as well see the last one.

Sex and the City - ****1/2
Yes!! I loved it! I've heard mixed reviews, but I thought it was well done. It was a lot like the t.v. show and I thought that was a positive thing. The story was good and it was great to see the girls again. It made me a little nostalgic for some girl time...and some man time. I recommend to all the ladies out there.

This is funny

I know that I post stuff from YouTube periodically, but I actually saw this orginally on Larry King and was quite happy to see that someone else must have found it as funny as I did. To catch you up, this is video taken from Larry King Live last night about aliens. I have watched it several times (I tivo'd it) and I laugh and laugh. The roommie is also a fan. The good stuff starts around the 53rd second. I hope you think it is as hilarious as I did...

12 quirks...

I decided that since I got tagged twice - once Lydia and once by Angela, I would go ahead and list 12 sorta short quirks/little know facts. I hope they're not too boring...

1. To make a sandwich the bread must match up. I want all sides to match and the mayo needs to be spread evenly all over the bread. Think of it like wall-to-wall carpeting, it must go up to all edges.

2. I'm scared of pool drains. I don't even like to swim over them. They literally give me the willies.

3. Although most people who know me casually would not believe it, I can cry all the time. I think the ASPCA commercials for homeless dogs is just about the most heart wrenching out there.

4. I can tell you how old most celebrities are. I'm not sure why, but is just an odd talent.

5. I can wiggle my ears

6. I read an average of 4 books a week. I would say I easily read 200 books a year.

7. I love true crime shows. I am fascinated, yet repelled by evil in the world.

8. If you have spent the night at my house, I have probably checked to see if you are breathing.

9. I get my feelings hurt a lot. I rarely say anything and just try to get over it.

10. I am more nostalgic, hopeful, loving, and traditional than even my closest friends probably realize - I just don't show it because I am afraid of being rejected or laughed at.

11. I was very unpopular until the age of 13. Up to that point I only had two friends. To this day I am grateful for all of the friendships I have.

12. I love biographies. I love reading about people's lives and the times they lived in. (I am currently watching a PBS bio on Harry and Bess Truman)

I tag...

Peyton (you should post a blog, it's been a while)
Susie
Roach (I guess you could list them in the comments...)

List 6 quirks about yourself
Tag some people to do it too
There are some other rules, but I forgot what they were...

Saturday, May 24, 2008

Just a note

I got tagged by Lydia to list quirks about myself, but I'm going to wait until after Memorial Day to do it. Try to hold out until then...harhar.

Just a note

Although the people who read this blog (all three of you) most likely don't do this, I feel it is my duty to society to advise against this...

When one is thinking one should keep one's mouth shut. When it is hanging wide open it just doesn't make one look that smart. It makes ya look like a dumbass.

I hope someone has stumbled upon this blog today and will keep their mouth shut in the future.

Back from the beach...

Several friends and I headed down to Gulf Shores this weekend. We left around midnight Friday night and got back Monday night. It was a quick trip, but a little something to calm me before the craziness of Summer Reading. I called work today to check in and see how things were going and I just shouldn't have done it. Seriously, why did I call in? It's not going to make me feel any better. I'm not going to be able to fix anything and all it does is make me feel guilty about not being at work. Literally, I took 2 vacation days and I feel guilty. It's ridiculous. I hate the summer. That is one thing about being a children's librarian in a public library - you lose your summer. You learn to dread it and I all think about is summers of days gone by. Why didn't I appreciate summers off? I'm going to have to wait until I'm 65 to have another summer off.

If you can't tell, I seem to be suffering from vacation blues.

Just 'cause

I was asked to make out a list of the 10 books that I would want to have with me if I was stranded on a desert island. I decided to share them with you. You're welcome...haha

A little note about my picks: if you are looking for a list of books that expand the mind and make you think, then this isn’t the list for you. If I’m stuck on a desert island, then I want to have some great books to take my mind off of my plight.

Sarah’s Child by Linda Howard (she is from Gadsden, AL)
Not exactly upping the ante intellectually, but it is a great story packed with a little bit of tragedy, alpha masculinity and just a great romantic story. I have probably re-read this book at least 100 times.

Beach Music by Pat Conroy
Pat Conroy is a great southern author who is capable of highlighting the beauty and flaws of the region.

Lover Awakened by J.R. Ward
The love story is hot and the plot is quick - great book to read when whiling away your time on an island.

Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris
His brother, Rooster, is an outrageous riot and whose outlook on life is nothing if not unique. Don’t miss “Rooster at the Hitchin’ Post.”

Dairy Queen by Catherine Murdock
This is a Young Adult novel, but it is one of the most heartwarming books you will read.

Shades of Twilight by Linda Howard
I read this book about 12 years ago and it was my first Howard novel and I continue to re-read it periodically.

Harry Potter and the…(fill in the blank here); books 1-7
Considering you must read all the books to find out what happens, I have decided to only count it as one.

Corbin’s Fancy by Linda Lael Miller
This is a light-hearted book that features the classic clash of a hard-headed woman and hard-headed man.

Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer
This Young Adult apocalyptic thriller will surely take your mind off of your desolate desert island.

Once in Paris by Diana Palmer
I own all of her books (well over 100 and counting) and this is probably favorite. It’s on my re-reading shelf.

Like Manna from Heaven

The roommie won another prize!! This time it is something way cooler than a gift card. She won an Amp/Mountain Dew mini-fridge! That's not all...Amp is a primary sponsor of Dale Jr's car and the fridge is decorated with all Dale Jr. and #88 stuff (that's his number). We are going to put it in the living room. No need to get up for a beer anymore. Tears are literally in my eyes as I type this. I love sweepstakes!!

watch The Soup on E!? Joel McHale is hilarious and his observations of the stupidity of celebrities is awesome. If you don't watch it, give it a try.

The last sign you're a loser....

I would say the first, but let's face it when you reach this level, it's clearly the bottom of the barrel.

It's Friday night/Saturday morning and I am enjoying a Tivo marathon. That's not bad enough, people...do you wonder what has brought on this tivo watching? Well, I've upgraded from the old tivo and I need to clear it out before I hook up the new one.

I'm going from a regular tivo that records only one program at once to a dual tuner. I can now record two programs at once! I am amazed by technology. I have no idea how it works, but I love it! This really fits into my First Waver Theory. No Cable, No air conditioning, no beer = Katie a shell of her former self.

Screw growing old gracefully

I just watched the Oprah show with Tina Turner and Cher. Whether or not you are a fan of either of these ladies, they sure have turned the notion of getting older on its head. Tina Turner is 68 years old and still has a killer pair of legs. I swear that woman has sold her soul to the devil and it was worth it. Cher ain't half bad herself and she looked quite good in her red mini-dress (although the red boots she was weraring weren't my favorites...) So, as I was saying they are a testament to how good women can look as they age. It is so unfair how men seem to get better looking and women start looking like dried up prunes. I've decided to include a YouTube video of a classic Tina performance...

From my blog to....

The draught is over!! The roommie won something! Her boyfriend called while she was at work today and said that several people he knows (his mom for one) had gotten gift cards in the mail from a phone in contest and he wanted me to check the mailbox. I checked and there was an envelope and I could feel a gift card inside (I didn't open it). Yay! This is just the beginning. Trips, cash, cars!!

The sweeper within

So, there's been a bit of a trend happening at the G-Unit Mansion. The roommie has become a "sweeper." Do you know what this is? It is someone that enters sweepstakes and other contests for fabulous trips and other prizes. Part of this was inspired by her bf's mom. So, I guess you want to know what she's won, right?

nuthin'.

When this first started she was entering some big ticket contests, but after the draught I believe she is down to t-shirts, cups, and butter. Seriously, it was just a mail in rebate for Land O' Lakes finest, but I think she'll take anything at this point. I am quite supportive of the new hobby 'cause I hope that if she wins some awesome trip for a group of her friends I will be included. How messed up would that be if she won an awesome trip (not for two - obviously, she would take the bf...) and then had me stay behind to take care of Bad Kitty? So wrong.

Fingers crossed, people. There are some sweet NASCAR prize packages...

I just connected with an old friend from childhood/high school. This probably would not have been possible but for Facebook. Peyton and Ashley, it's someone you know, too :)

That Oprah

There seems to be some sort of Oprah backlash these days. I guess it is just one more thing for conservatives (sorry to generalize) to pick on and use as an example of how the evil liberals are taking over the world. What.Ever. I really don't have too much beef with someone who donates millions to charity every year, gets people to read books, and general attempts to put a positive message out there. I guess some people think she has too much influence. Well, I consider myself a person that thinks for myself and I am not going to do something just because Oprah told me to. Anyhoo, this post has diverted from my original intent...

I was watching the show today and she followed up about a show she did about puppy mills. I swear nothing is more sad than poor little dogs who have been mistreated. It makes me so mad when people abuse animals. They are so trusting and have no idea what is going on and I can only imagine the confusion and betrayal (even if people don't think they can feel betrayal). I guess the point of this post is just that half the time I watch the show I end up crying. I'm such a sap.

It should be a holiday

Ah, Talladega weekend in Alabama. Love it, love it, love it. For all you skeptics out there...you just don't get it and, perhaps, never will. That's okay because it is something that provides me with true pleasure. I love sitting on my couch being able to watch the race, read the Sunday paper, clip coupons, talk on the phone, and blog. That's how I watch a race. It's a long haul to the end so you gotta be prepared with food and alternative entertainment (i.e. beer and a nap) for the inevitable caution flags.

P.S. I know it's sad, but if you remember this post then you can appreciate how this made me feel. I got hit on last night. Twice. It was just a nice affirmation that I am not the lease appealing person in the world, there might actually be two or three less appealing people...I kid, I kid. No really, it was just nice.

It was a good week

As I am a superstitious person (when it comes to acknowledging good things) I am a bit hesitant to admit that I had a great week. As you know, I had my "snow day" on Monday, went to work on Tuesday, went to a conference on Wednesday and Thursday and then went to work Friday. All in all, it was an easy week and I know that next week will be harder, but it was nice to just a have a week to coast.

Currently, I am reading The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs for my book club. I'm a little over halfway through the book and I think it's my favorite so far. I would recommend it to the ladies out there.

I've been giving more thought to the writing idea and I think I might pursue the idea of writing about working in a library. I think I will use some of my own experiences and expand on it from there. No worries, I don't plan on "dooce-ing" myself.

So that's it in a nutshell.

A whisper turning into something louder

I have been feeling the urge to write. I haven't really said anything about it on here because I'm not sure what I want to write. Perhaps short stories, ala David Sedaris? Something scholarly to get published in a journal (in this case it would be something I wrote when I was finishing up my Masters in History and get it polished for formal pub)? I don't even know where to start. I write periodically on here, but nothing very disciplined. I've thought about setting up a work area in my apartment, but I'm not sure I would want to stay secluded somewhere away from a t.v., which is what I would have to do. I went to an author's luncheon for work today and was really inspired by a couple of the speakers. I feel like I am being sent a message from my environment. I know that sounds a little "Oprah-y" but it's really how it seems.

Snow Day in April!!!!!!!!

Not really, but there was a water main break so my boss closed the library. Yay!!

It was shaping up to be quite the productive day as I went to the gym this morning and did a good 45 min on the arc trainer and precor and then I took a shower and had a salad. Now with the work news I am thinking about seeing a movie. Hmmm what to see? I just saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall last night (run don't walk, btw) so I'm not sure what I would go see. I'm kind of feeling the idea of a nap though. Hmmmm, must think, think, think.

I recommend the book...

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist...

Here's a link to the www.amazon.com page.

Next up on my teen reading extravaganza...Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan

P.S. Nick and Norah is being released as a movie on Oct. 3rd (my bday - a coincidence? I think not)

Last one for the week...

Today's question is once again inspired by my boring endless workday...

"When I am bored at work and want to goof off, I..."

It pretty much starts when I get to work and I check www.cnn.com before I check my email. I review the stories that seem interesting. I return to good ole' CNN at least 3 or 4 times a day and work my way through the stories that go from very interesting to just something to read. I am also constantly on www.amazon.com - my favorite thing to do is read the reviews that people have written about books I have already read. I like to see what other people think, particularly the 5 star and 1 star reviews. I'm weird, so what?

Thanks for participating in theme week. I believe I'll try it again in the somewhat near future.

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Okay, so there's not really a theme to theme week...

"The last book (or magazine in certain people's cases) I read was___________ by _____________. I thought the book was __________. It was about _____________"

So, the last book I read was one that I finished last night. It was Now You See Her by Jacquelyn Mitchard. It was annoying, but okay. It was about a teenage girl who fakes her own disappearance. The book seems to try and explain why she would do something so extreme and then you find out that things are not what they seem. Ooooh, a twist!

Enjoy

New Question

This is something I thought about today as I gazed longingly out the window of a back office at work. Not that college was great all the time, but there were definitely some awesome perks...

"what is something that you took for granted while you were in college?"

I took for granted the ability to have maybe two classes a day and spending the rest of my time doing what I wanted. Being able to hang out on the quad during the middle of the day and enjoying a beautiful day outside. Oh the life!

P.S. if you didn't go to college then you could just answer it from the point of view of something you took for granted when you were younger.

Blast from the past: theme week

If you've read ye ole' blog since or around its inception, I used to be much more interprising and creative. I used to have theme weeks. So I've decided for sh*ts and giggles to try it out again. Usually, I give a little notice, but oh well here goes...if you have anything to contribute feel free...

"Today at work I did something you didn't do"

I cleaned out a hamster cage while listening to my ipod which is loaded with 80s, hardcore rap, and electronica.

what about you...?

Things that make you go hmmm.

I am currently watching Georgia Rule (starring Lindsay Lohan, Felicity Huffman, and Jane Fonda). Although Lindsay's career has been in the crapper for quite some time, this movie is not exactly what I was expecting. There's quite a bit more of sex and innuendo than I expected. So my basic assessment is that it might just be worth watching...

PSA: Nickelback

Why are they always on the radio? Why are their songs always someone's ringtone? WHY?? Why, sweet Jesus, Why?

Okay, for those of you who don't already know...they suck hardcore. Seriously, almost all of their songs sound the same and it just drives me crazy. I want you to let them go. If you are an "out and proud" or "closeted" Nickelback fan - relinquish them. Find a real band. Please.

And for all that is holy, make it stop playing on the radio all the f*cking time.

The Unplanned Pregnancy Marathon

Tonight I watched August Rush and Waitress. Both of these movies star Keri Russell. Both of these movies involve Keri Russell's character getting pregnant unexpectedly. In terms of movie reviews, I would give August Rush 3.5 stars. Waitress gets 4 stars. There are several caveats:

August Rush is a strange movie. There's a lot of "feeling the music" and "hoping they will come." In the Field of Dreams kind of way. The ending alone bumps the movie up at least a star.

Waitress should not be judged by the terrible Southern accents. If you try to ignore them then you will be able to enjoy the story.

Mama Like

A little something to brighten your weekend. I was just watching the tail end of Just Friends. If you haven't seen this movie then you should. It is one of those movies that was probably in the theaters for five minutes, but it's really funny. It stars Ryan Reynolds (part of the reason for the picture above - right), Amy Smart, and Chris Klein. I would give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

Helpful advice

Although I am not a parent, I am able to spot the behavior that parents display that will get their children's asses kicked at school. (I truly saw this earlier this week - the child was 7)

-cutting up said child's chicken NUGGETS into the tiniest pieces possible and unpacking his lunch for him and placing everything just so and explaining what everything is even though it is only chicken and doritos.
-holding a cup to the child's mouth so that he can drink despite the fact that there were no discernible reasons why the child's own arms would not support the slight weight of a paper cup. You might as well regress back to a sippy cup and a bib.
-cutting HIS hair in a pageboy style home haircut (like the picture above, but with shorter bangs - I sh*t you not)

This child is in for a lifetime of wedgies and swirlies and any other torture that kids can come up with these days. It won't be pretty.

Another one of those posts that I should delete

Why should I delete it? Partly because some of what I am going to allude to involves people who read this blog periodically. Oh well. I have felt this one brewing for a while, but I didn't really know how to express it or even if I wanted to.

I'm lonely. I am lacking in human contact. I have friends and I see them pretty frequently, but I don't have a person to share things with. This has come more to a head because it seems like Noah's Ark around here (two by two if you get the analogy) and I'm left out. Sometimes I withdraw myself from these friends because I don't want to be the third wheel. I don't want them to think that I am so sad and pathetic that I will have nothing else to do. I think I might be overly sensitive and they probably don't feel that way, but I would hate for them to ever feel this way. It was just be unbearable humiliating. I guess it just makes me sad that I am missing out on an important part of life. Unfortunately, I really don't know how to remedy this. There is a part of me (a pretty big part) that figures that there is just something inherently wrong with me and that is the reason I am destined to be alone. I know this sounds melodramatic, but it really is how I feel.

Sad, but true: someone told me I was gorgeous this weekend and I had to ask who he was talking to even though the only other person around was Roach. Boy, if that doesn't put my state of mind in perspective nothing will.

second verse, same as the first

Everyday is the same. I go to work, figure up what I will do, finish my project and wait for an acceptable time to go home. Blah, Blah, Blah.

As I type this, there is a contact lens commercial on. Let me set the scene: Guys playing football. Guy with glasses fumbles. Hot guy friend asks him to ditch the contact lenses. Next scene...former guy with glasses sitting quite cozily on couch with his glasses hating friend. All is right with the world. No more glasses. Awesome football player.

What if life was like that commercial? There I am having a bad day and one of my friends comes up and tells me that I need to wear different sunglasses and life will be alright. Pan to me looking gloriously happy with new shades.

I guess I want to live in a commercial.

How was your weekend?

Mine was spent alternating between my bedroom and bathroom. Starting at 9 am Saturday morning, I had a ferocious stomach bug and felt AWFUL. I'm feeling better now, just sore and tired. So, this weekend was a bust. I didn't do anything fun. I'm really hungry right now and I can't decide what to eat. I'm past the nausea and I want meat. Weird, huh? I guess my body is demanding protein.

Just so you know

Although I am a librarian...I don't read for a living. I actually don't read at work. At All. For anyone that knows me, you would realize that if there was a way for me to read at work it would happen.

A New Gig

With gas being so expensive and under the theory that extra money is always good, I have started hostessing at the restaraunt that the roommie works at. Now don't worry, we really won't work together once - maybe once a week. Basically, it will fill my tank and I get a discount on food. Not bad, eh?

So after my post yesterday, I had a little drama. Apparently, I left my lights on when I parked my car at work. We all know what that means...dead battery. A car was parked next to me and I had to ask everyone at the library if they were driving a certain car so that I could either have them move it or get them to give me a jump. The very person that owned the car initially shook his head "no" when I came around to him. Some people drive me insane. Anyway, he did come out to his car (once I made a terse announcement over the P.A. system) and jumped the car. Why did he deny he was the owner in the first place? I have no idea. Oh well, another mystery of life.

A lack of drama...

...produces a lack of blogs. I'm not complaining. I haven't had much to say. I've got my nose to the grindstone and I am working on Summer Reading.

I'm so boring. I promise to put something interesting up. soon. Usually after I post something like this then something crazy happens.

I just thought of something to add...I have a confession: I like Miley Cyrus. I like her song "See You Again." You know what's even more bizarre? Several of my friends like the song, too. I'm not ashamed. I like Miley/Hannah and I'm proud.

The Nudity Police

I had a first today...

I was shelving books and I was about to put away a book about Michelangelo for children. I noticed the book didn't seem to be lying flat, which sometimes indicates water damage, so I opened it up and noticed that there were numerous paper clips all over the book. Ugh. I hate when I find paper clips in books because they rip the pages and if left in long enough can discolor or eat through the pages (so...note to readers - don't put them in any books you have!). I digress. The paper clips were at the top, side and bottom of groups of pages and then there were a couple of sheets of copy paper paper clipped inside the book. Well, after removing the paper clips and paper I realized that the person who had had the book was trying to cover up the nudity in the paintings and sculptures. Of Michelangelo. The Sistine Chapel Michelangelo, people, not Hustler. I rolled my eyes and just couldn't help but laugh. If that is what you are going to do to a book about art, then don't check it out. Their kid will probably end up being a porn star.

Not bad

Let me begin by saying that last month's book club pick, the very trendy Atonement, was not to my taste. I need to say just one thing: there is no atonement in Atonement. Blah. I donated my book immediately after the book club meeting because I knew I would never crack that book open again.

This month we read The Tenth Circle (as mentioned below) and it was pretty good. It was sad and there were no easy answers, but all in all it was a good read. It was also a fast read and that's nice because I like to read a lot of books and I like to move through them pretty quickly. I would say out of 5 stars it would be a 3.5.

On another related note, I have to say that I am really enjoying the club. It's nice to meet with a group of women and just have a good time and discuss books. If you have a chance to join or form such a group then do so :)
