Oooookkkkaaaaaayyyyy....

Um, I'm not sure if it's the places I've been hanging out at lately, but I keep seeing people talking to themselves. In this day and age, it is not too unusual to see someone talking to themselves and realize they're just talking on a hands-free headset, but the people I'm talking about are straight up C-R-A-Z-Y. Not only are they carrying on a full a conversation with themselves, but you can tell "someone" is talking back. Hey, I talk to myself from time to time, but I try to refrain from doing it in the presence of other people. A few of these people I have seen are not homeless and seem to hold down steady jobs and still they blab away at nothing (which irks me for several reasons - most of all b/c they have real jobs, but I digress). Am I being too harsh, should I have more tolerance for the wacked in the head? I'm not sure, I shall take this under advisement...

wow. that's unpopular.

Today I read an article that stated that 41% of people polled would not like to go camping with Tom Cruise. The sad part is that the person directly behind this number (39%) was Saddam Hussein. You know how I was referring to rock bottom earlier this week? Well, Tom has hit his.

Different strokes for different folks

I was watching an episode of House Hunters last night and it struck me how different people can be. This episode featured a 24 year-old guy who was about to graduate from college and was interested in purchasing his first home. This, in and of itself, was a bit different from most episodes because they usually feature older couples who tend to have more money. Anyhoo, this guy discussed how he had always wanted to live in a house and had been saving his money since HIGH SCHOOL. I have trouble even saving enough money for a coke later in the workday and this guy is socking away money for a house 6-8 years down the road? That Kenmore box is looking more and more likely - well, that or Jenny's porch.

Beep, beep, beep: Debauchery Ahead.

Tonight (by the time you read this is will be Friday) we will be celebrating Jenny's 72nd B-day. I know what you're thinking - She looks really good for that old. It's true, she sleeps in a cryogenic chamber every night (her and Michael Jackson)...Just kidding....Jenny is 27 and doesn't look a day over 25. We will be having a delicious dinner and then head out to local bars for some naughty behavior. I can't be specific until the evening, but I will hazard to guess that shots, mixed drinks, ibuprofen, and greasy food will be consumed during the evening. Hope everyone is doing well and has a safe weekend. Once again, take a cab. I know I will.

Where'd my blog go?

I'm trying to find it, so bear with this message

Kids, today we have a guest blogger

I have not been feeling too creative today so I have decided to turn the reins of the blog over to someone that has wanted to share his feelings for a long time: Teddy.

Hi everybody! Katie has let me comment officially today, but let's face it - the creative one in this relationship has always been me. Some of you have met me, but several of you haven't so I will give you my description. To say that I'm a handsome fellow is quite the understatement. I have a salt and pepper coat, a bit shaggy (which is hip with the kids these days), ears that are ever so floppy and jaunty, great teeth, and a bright red Dale Jr. collar. I keep slim and trim by running around the apartment and jumping up and down from the couch in my efforts to keep watch over the neighborhood. Some people say I smell, I hate to name names, but we'll call one of my detractors 'Benny.' I prefer to think I have a distinctive aroma, more a cross between rugged male and the outdoors.

I have a pretty phat life. I have to share the bed with Katie at night, but I usually get it to myself during the day. Katie has some pretty lame taste in telly so the Tivo is constantly jumping around from one crap show to the other. Forgive her, she can't help being inherently cheesy. My tastes run more to the Animal Planet and Bravo. Usually I eat once a day, but I don't have much of an appetite. I do have to note that that b*tch (Katie) eats food in front of me all the time and has the audacity to deny me even a lick. All those stories of me sneaking food? True, but now you see why I do it. Well, I guess that's all I have to say for now - I need my beauty sleep. 'Til next time,

Ciao,
Teddy G.

Rock Bottom

I don't usually post so close together, but I feel the need to admit another embarassing fact about my life:

As a result of my Lenten promise, I have taken to drinking other beverages. I'm just not the Darren from Bewitched type (fix myself a martini upon my arrival home from work) so I don't have a lot of liquor in the house. I like something I can open, hear a little hiss, and take a swig. No, I haven't sunk to drinking Wild Irish Rose or Mad Dog 20/20. No, even lower. I have now started drinking:

This

What's next? Where will the madness end. The horror, the horror.

Am I addicted to the internet?

Probably, but I don't care. I don't know about you, but I have certain websites I visit on a daily basis and if I miss them I feel lost. Don't worry, I don't get the DTs or feel extreme depression if can't get to my sites. I thought I would give you a list of the sites I frequent on a daily basis (generally):

Blogs:
Sarah M.
Lora Leigh
Natalie
Matt
Lydia
Lindsey
Katy
Peyton
Susie
Me Rachel
Nalini Singh
Dooce

Sites:
CNN
NASCAR
GMAIL
The Futon Critic
MySpace
People Magazine
Yahoo Games
Yahoo Entertainment News
The Weather Channel
My bank site

I don't really feel bad about my internet habits, but I realize that they're ingrained in my daily routine. Anything you can't miss?

Quarter Life Crisis

I don't want to take credit for the terminology as it was originally Jenny's usage of the quarter life crisis. After giving props to the right person, I am hopping right in to today's topic:

I am still in Nashville and I am dreading heading back to B'ham. It is not because I don't love my own apartment, friends, general way of life in the magic city, but the thought of returning to my job is enough to send me into an eternal despair that I may never escape from. I hate my job. I think this has been clear over the past few months, but I just really need to get that out in the open. I HATE MY JOB. For the most part, I like/love the people I work with and I also like a lot of the people I come in contact with on a daily basis, but I HATE THE PAY AND THE HOURS. I just assumed that after I graduated I would have a job within the first month or two of working, but this is untrue. For the first time in my life, I actually know what I want to do, but there aren't any jobs open for what I want and I am not that interested in moving. The idea of facing endless weeks of the same old same old is almost unbearable and it is absolutely financially DISASTROUS. The thing that I find so distressing is that the days and weeks seem to be moving with turtle like speed, but I also seem to lose track of the time I have spent in this job and I figure I am going to wake up one day and be forty working the same job living on Jenny's porch (and if anyone has seen her porch, this is a bit of a daunting possibility - not her fault, but her Evil Landlord). I just can't move home. Maybe I could live in some sort of halfway home for convicts or special needs people. I think they're about on my speed.

Tomorrow: back to the old ball and chain.

Quote for the day/week: "better living through chemistry"

Just a note

Even though he is on a reality show, Hulk Hogan insists on wearing a fanny pack. Hasn't anyone let him know that this is not a look one should be going for. Or a bleach blonde mustache. Or tight spandex panties. Oh well.

Here's the good news

I am home right now, sitting on the couch in the den watching Storytellers on Vh1 (featuring the BeeGees - discussing how they wrote "Stayin Alive") and I can tell you about the good news that I alluded to earlier this week. My brother asked his girlfriend to marry him tonight and she said yes. I am very happy for the two of them. My brother is a nester. He was meant to get married and have a family, which is good, because people are going to have to hold their breath when it comes to me. The ring is beee-u-t-eee-full. He had a jeweler make it and even guessed the right size. They were meant for each other. Now, comes the less fun part of parties, showers, and the actual wedding. She doesn't have any sisters so I figure my chances of being in the wedding are pretty high. Yip-pee. I'm not into frou-frou or ruffles and that is what weddings tend to be about. In pastels. Jenny and I are hoping to be flower girls, but I'll settle for bartender. Yes, it may be a bit unconventional, but I think I would have a much better time than if I was stuck in an ugly dress with a fake smile pasted on my face (this does not mean that I am unhappy about this turn of events, I just hate dressing up). Maybe she will have a pajama themed wedding?

Hope springs eternal.

Drink Green Beer for me...or any beer for that matter...

I am pleased to report that I am feeling much more positive on this spring morning and not nearly as angry as I was these past few days. I am currently at work, but I am leaving in a couple of hours and hitting the road for my old stomping ground. Let's face it, even when I lived there, I didn't do too much stomping. I will get to see several people I haven't see in a while and I will also see about this good news that I eluded to earlier this week. I hope everyone has a great St. Patrick's Day and a wonderful weekend in general. Be good and take a cab home (if you need one).

I am an angry person. apparently.

For the last couple of days I have been really mad. Not about anything in particular and I have managed to keep most of it to myself, but I am still really pissed. I get annoyed at people when they are doing nothing wrong and I just want to be by myself. I felt better today and I haven't had the same amount of anger, but it is still there. It is quite strange and I hope I am able to refrain from going off on someone. If you are reading this and we are going to be talking in the next few days: don't take anything I say personally. I am heading to Nashville this weekend for some R&R and maybe that will chill me out.

I kind of feel like Napoleon in Napoleon Dynomite:

"Gosh!...Idiot!"

I feel like talkin'

I just feel like talking to someone and since everyone has gone to sleep I have decided to talk to blogger. Nothing much is going on in my life and, yes, this is the same girl that was only a few hours earlier discussing how they did not want to do ANYTHING. No need to worry, I still don't want to do anything. I just want to talk about not doing anything. That's okay. I am visiting Nashvegas this weekend and I might have some big news to report. Nothing related to me, per se, but exciting non the less. At this point in my life, I'll take exciting news for anything. BTW, in an attempt to give some props:

Happy Birthday to Adrienne and my goddaughter, Isabella (well, tomorrow 3/15)! Some of the best people I know.

Like I didn't have enough tv to watch...

I am now addicted to Cheerleader Nation. This guilty pleasure of a show is AWESOME. I can't help but be fascinated by it. I used to make fun of cheerleaders in high school, but I think part of this was the natural inclination of youth to make fun of something you either can't do or don't understand. Anyhoo, great drama and it is fun to watch these highschoolers talk and act like idiots. This is really not a jugdement call, it is more a product of their age. I would try to pretend to be cooler and aloof to this show, but it would be pointless after all of the secrets I have already revealed to blogger.

The most unmotivated person in the ENTIRE world

I feel like doing absolutely nothing. Not one thing. I am too lazy to check my email, play on myspace, play games on yahoo, I want to lay around like a slug and try to burn as few calories as possible. It is sad when you look at your dog sleeping on the floor and you are jealous of his simple lifestyle. It is a good thing I don't have anything pressing to do because it just wouldn't get done.

Kids, the word for the day is: blah.

Sooooooo stoked!

I just found out that there are plans to make a sequel to Harold and Kumar! For those of you who saw the original there was definitely room for a second installment and it is titled (perfectly):

Harold and Kumar go to Amsterdam

Here's some of the info.

It's really the little things, isn't it?

How much time do you have?

Today, I was working and there is constant controversy over the music we play in the facility. Honestly, there is absolutely no way to please everyone and it is a frustrating and ultimately pointless endeavor to try and make everyone happy. I was sitting at the front when this man came up to the desk and made a complaint. To give you some background, this is someone that complains EVERYTIME he is in the place and has been vocal to managers and staff alike about his displeasure. He always makes snotty comments about the music whenever I see him and I have very little patience for his childish behavior. So back to today, he came up to me while an Eminem song was on in which he (Em) was imploring females to "shake that ass" (except ass was actually silenced in the song). He (Mr. complainer) told me (yes, told) to change the channel and I told him I was not allowed and he said that he spoke to my boss and she said that we could change the channel. He also told me that as a female I should be offended by the content of the song as well. First off, I don't like anyone telling me what should or should not offend me and what was more offensive was his condescending tone and general ass-ness. I called my boss and she informed me that there was one other channel I could change it to. I went ahead and changed it to soft rock and went back to my business. The guy came up again and complained about the new music and informed me it was like "the inmates running the asylum." I was quite perplexed about this comment as I don't consider myself an inmate and he was the one orchestrating the entire exchange. He finally approached someone else and told them that he wanted the music changed (this person did not know that we had already had a conversation about this) and this staff member changed it back to the other station. The original station. I kept hoping the Eminem song would come back on and I could just watch his reaction. Alas, I was off for the afternoon. This gets to the title of the post which is the amount of time you have to spend on such pointless endeavors. I have a suggestion for this guy: get some headphones and listen to Yanni or whatever other bad music he surely is a fan of.

Addicted to...

Myspace. I thought I would register and look at it every once in a while, but I find that I can't help myself. Now that I have figured out how to log on while at work, I am pretty sure that I will never spend another productive moment at my place of employment. I think myspac-ing is my new way of drunk dialing. I must stop myself from soliciting people to be my friends. If you are reading this and never met me, there is a very good chance that I have extended you an invite. If you haven't gotten it yet, just give me another couple of days. I'm coming for you.

Here is something I know...

Jenny will know what I mean by this one:

I may not know a lot. I may be unhappy about a lot of things. I may be self-deprecating to an ultimate fault. I may drive my friends crazy. I may not be the most caring individual. But, this is what I know:

After surfing through myspace for close to one million years, I have come to the conclusion that there is someone on this site that I am:

Better than, prettier than, nicer than, more caring than, less likely to go to hell than, more willing to face time in prison than...Generally, a more all around okay person than...

Did you think I would reveal this person's name. Oh no. God has this person's number, no need for me to reveal it. Karma's a bitch. I am even waiting for their time to run out.

Response

Since several BSC alums read this blog, I have decided to address the church arsons and the Colleges response to these crimes.

Over the past couple of days I have read several articles about the arrests of the BSC students and the community's reaction to these "shocking" turn of events. First of all, of course people are shocked. Generally one does not willingly hang out with people you would automatically assume would burn down churches. If you do, that means you have extremely low standards for friendship. Secondly, the president of Birmingham-Southern released a statement about the arrests and noted that the permissive use of alcohol in today's youth culture contributed to the arsons. People, I have been drunk many, many times - on BSC's campus no less - and I have NEVER considered setting fire to anything. If anything, I was more fascinated by fire as a child and more likely to play with matches at this time and I certainly wasn't a hard drinkin' eight year old. Lots of people make bad decisions when they drink and I am certainly one of them, but to suggest that one would travel to the middle of the woods and set fire to numerous churches as a result of alcohol consumption is a cop out. Lastly, from what has been reported, the students said the fires started as a joke that got out of hand. That's plain old crap. You don't burn down churches as a joke. It is a malicious act that is intended to hurt people. One of the articles in the Birmingham News noted that two of the students were Satanists, but they weren't worshipping Satan - it was just about the "pursuit of knowledge." Once again, that's crap. The whole thing is a bunch of BULLSHIT on their part and I hope that when they are sentenced the judge throws away the key.

And that's all I have to say on the subject.

Hello, My name is Katie and I'm an idiot.

In the interest of full disclosure and for other people's amusement I have decided to tell an embarrassing story about myself. You know how I have been struggling to fix my tivo all week? Well, it turns out that nothing was wrong with it. I'm just an idiot. Here is how it unfolded:
Mid-December I took my laptop home and disrupted the router connection to both the television and the tivo. Since this time I have struggled to get my router to maintain any sort of connection with the tivo or computer and the process has been quite irritating (to say the very least). I would run my linksys setup cd and get the thing started, but inevitably my connection would fail and I would have to do the whole thing over again. Then last week I thought my wireless adaptor had given up the ghost and I decided to go with a wired one to prevent these problems from happening anymore. Well, I couldn't find a wired adaptor and ended up purchasing another wireless one (different brand) to use and it was not compatible with the damn thing. I went back to BestBuy (where I bought the new adaptor) and had them SPECIALLY order me a wired router and returned the one I had just bought. Imagine my excitement last night when I got home and found my new adaptor outside of my door. I got inside the apartment, reconfigured the router (did I fail to mention that I never went all the way through the guided setup and would quit after I got an initial wireless signal?) and hooked up the new wired adaptor. Well, as luck would have it this adaptor also did not work and I was very frustrated and then on a whim (and desperation) I plugged in the original wireless adaptor I got months ago and it worked with little effort. So, all in all, I have spent close to $100, two trips to BestBuy (soon to be 3, to return the wired adaptor), countless hours of misery (sad, but true), and the priceless feeling of stupidity, to come to the conclusion that all of this was pointless and I could have solved this problem months ago, without any extra money or frustration. I believe this is the point in the story where you say "and there's your sign."

It's back, sweet Jesus, it's back.

My tivo, that is. I was finally able to connect to the tivo service and I am in a state close to euphoria. Honestly, I believe that this has been a character building experience. I lost my tivo service and I am still alive. Miracles do happen. I managed to withstand the misery and not succumb to the temptation of beer or suicide. Join with me in this celebration (oh, and by the way, I am totally going to hell for this blasphemous post).

All in the name of science

I'm sick. I have a nasty cold and I have come to the only reasonable conclusion there is. The lack of beer has caused this to happen. I figure that before Wednesday of last week my body was such a toxic site that no self-respecting germ would have made its way to my body. Now, all my clean living (well, relatively clean - compared to last week - super clean) I have become host to some sort of dread parasite that is slowly sapping my strength and will to live. My mother always said that she never got really sick until she quit smoking and then all hell broke loose. She said it was because of the fine coating of nicotine and tar she had that served as a "protective seal" against harmful elements. That's what I have forfeited. My protective seal of hops and barley - two of the most important food groups and vitamin supplements if you ask me. Next week - the plague. It really will be like Passover.

Two ways to get an express ticket to hell...

Either: Steal a poor girl's prostetic legs so that she has no way to get around (I saw this story on cnn.com). Not only did someone steal her legs, but they did it TWICE. My question is why? This is not exactly like something that people usually steal like a car or t.v. I have no purpose for fake legs, unless I was interested in recreating the "leg lamp" from A Christmas Story. People suck.

Or: Burn down churches. All these church fires in Alabama have got me thinking about what people are capable of. Now, I'm no saint, but I'm pretty sure that I will not be setting fire to a house of worship anytime soon. Lying, cheating, stealing, impure thoughts, coveting - yes. Church burning - no. I'm such a prude.

My life

I find that I am looking at my life and wondering where things are going. Several of my friends seem to be advancing in their careers and what they're doing with their lives and I feel like I am in neutral. Maybe even reverse. I am a well-educated person who is essentially putting my high school diploma to use. I might as well have skipped the whole "college" thing and went straight to the job I have right now. In all honestly, I think alot of what I am feeling is the incredible amount of pressure I feel right now to get a job and start paying off my student loans. I have got to find a real job and get things rolling. I hope this will improve things because if it doesn't, I'm not sure what to do. Fun times.

Paper or Plastic?

I was at the grocery store the other day picking up a few essentials for the week. Like usual, my hands were full of stuff (I would get a basket, but I always convince myself that I am only getting a couple of things) and I got in the line. The lady who was checking me out pulled out paper bags and started to put my groceries in the bag. I thought this was a bit strange because most of the time the person loading the bags reaches for plastic first. I didn't say anything and ended up with three bags. I will tell you that I had the damndest time getting those bags out to my car. Unlike plastic, paper bags don't have handles and they're awkward. Maybe its an environmental thing - although I have heard that there really isn't much difference - but I want plastic. Next time someone tries to pack my stuff in paper, I will speak up.

no beer. no tivo. no reason to live.

Oh despair of all despair has descended upon the G household. For some reason I can't get the tivo to connect and now I am going to have to connect it to a phone line at Jenny's house and hope for the best. Sometimes I think things are just harder for me than other people. Plenty of people around this world have tivo on a wireless network and it just seems to work for them. Oh well, I will just take care of it tomorrow.

P.S. Oh and as for the Meg Ryan pic, has been added to my list of people that look "weird"

Update

My last gulp (I would say sip if it was true) of beer was at 11:55 p.m. I realize many of you who know me are a little surprised that I have decided to give up the nectar of the gods for Lent. I had a call from the Anheuser-Busch people (makers of Bud Light) expressing their concern for their second and third quarter profits (I plan to be back in full swing for the 4th quarter reports). Yes, the American economy may take a hit due to this decision, but I believe that my ability to fulfill this Lenten promise will make me a better person. I hope because if I don't get any kind of good results from this (aside from the money and calories saved) I'll be a bit peeved.

First time in print...

I have decided what I am giving up for Lent. I wanted to pick something that was going to be a big sacrifice for me and I think I have picked a doozy. I am giving up beer. There, it is now on the record and I can't go back on it without incurring the wrath of the Lord. Usually (or this was the way we did it when I was a kid) you get to have your Lenten sacrifice on Sunday's, but I am picking Saturday as my day to indulge. If you are giving something up, let me know what it is and we can commiserate together. Goodbye, sweet ale, goodbye.

Meet the Future Mr. G.

I want Alison's husband from Medium. He is kind, sensitive, hot, understanding, funny, smart and basically everything I want in a man. I figure if he can put up with some crazy psychic lady he can put up with my run-of-the-mill craziness anyday. Get jealous, people. I have called dibs on him and Dale Jr.

No Dr. Phil today

One thing that sucks about my tivo/cable box combination is that occasionally the cable box turns itself off for no reason. No big deal, right? Well it is. It's a big deal. The tivo is not aware of this cable box failure and continues to record the shows I have programmed. Unfortunately, I have to be home to turn the damn cable box on and get it on the right channel for tivo to work. Long story short, I came home and discovered said cable box off and no Dr. Phil for Monday. It just feels wrong. I shall comfort myself with an episode of Golden Girls. Hopefully this tragedy will not repeat itself for tomorrow. I need my daily t.v. therapy.

Organized Chaos

I watch Oprah religiously through the grace of my tivo. This past week she had two shows about debt and challenged her viewers to go on a debt diet. Right now, I am quite impoverished and my ability to go on a diet from debt is a bit unrealistic, but it did inspire me. I pulled out every old bill, insurance form, credit statements, and on, and on, and on. I have an accordian file that I started last year and I got partially organized, but over the past two days I have organized and purged my records and I am pleased to say that I have everything in its appropriate place and everything I don't need has hit the trash. I feel like I have really accomplished something. Over the past few months I have been absolutely INUNDATED by bills from the accident in September. I was reluctant to even check my mail because of these bills. Don't worry, my insurance is slowly but surely taking care of everything, but hospitals don't seem to grasp the point that they are going to have to be patient. Anyhoo, now I am not afraid to check my mail and I feel like I have everything at hand and organized. Are your things in order?

The Soul Patch: Discuss amongst yourselves

<-- One Question: Why?

The little bit of fuzz that some men, and a few unfortunate women have growing directly beneath their chins is absolutely beyond comprehension to me. It is attached to nothing and it certainly provides no aesthetic qualities or warmth (which is an acceptable reason for people growing beards that should not be doing so). Maybe I have missed some sort of important message that a soul patch provides aside from the obvious - "boy, that guy is a really bad shaver, look at that big patch of hair he missed"- As of right now I shall mock all the insist on sporting this look and encourage them to remove it from their face immediately.

Teddy is anorexic

I am convinced of this because he is a bitch to feed. He will pick at his food and then run to the door to go out in some sort of attempt to fool me. You know how some people who are around a bunch of overweight people become obsessed with calories? I think that this has happened to Teddy. Both my brother and father have dogs that are a bit thick around the middle and I think Teddy is just trying to watch his girlish figure. Most days I have to sit on the kitchen floor with him and tell him to "eat your dinner." Also, he is pretty picky and prefers to eat his food directly off of the floor. I think he finds the bowl superfluous and the floor provides a delicious aftertaste to his dry food. Generally, you are not supposed to change up dog food because it makes it even harder to get them to eat so that's why I haven't tried anything new. One positive side effect to all of his shenanigans is that he is really good at catching his food midair. Sometime when I really want to him to eat I will toss little bites to him and he has about an 85% accuracy rate. We may take the show on the road.

Tomorrow has got to be better. ha

No depressing post here. Sometimes I think that I have some sort of target on my back that says "please, give me crap about something." I think this sign flashes while at work. Sometimes I just make it through the work day thinking about my bed and my room with black out curtains. Do you think it is a bad thing to love my bed so much? I know Peyton loves her bed a lot. I think of all those people who live in the middle of the desert or jungle and don't have a bed and I just think they are missing out on one of the great pleasures of life. I really was made for this period in time. Generally, people enjoy a greater amount of leisure time than people from most generations before. Good for us. Laziness rules!

Monday Night Adventures

(Names have been changed to protect the identity of the animal in question)
I have mentioned Jenny numerous times in this blog and this is a post about her. Friday night Jenny had had a few adult beverages and while she was on the phone with her mom, she noticed that her cat - let's call her Wrinka - was upset by another cat on the outside of one of her windows. Jenny attempted to pull Wrinka away from the window and during the ensuing scuffle, Jenny came away with a bite on her hand, claw marks on her arm, and several deep claw gouges in her foot. Apparently these wounds were quite painful and bothered Jenny for the next couple of days. Jenny awoke Sunday morning with a foot the approximate size of her face (according to her little sister) and decided medical attention may be in order. After an extremely short visit to the E.R. (haha), some pain meds, and i.v. antibiotics, she was on her way. Unfortunately, the infection seemed to worsen during the later hours today and we took a trip back to the E.R. It turns out that her foot would require more medical treatment and Jenny is spending the night in a five star hospital as we speak. She is expected to make a full recovery, but she will be missing a few days of work. The funniest part of the evening? Apparently people who are prone to falling are forced to wear a red bracelet and red socks to further ostracize them from the other patients and identify them as someone in need of mocking. Luckily, Jenny has avoided the red socks, but she has only been in the hospital for a few hours. Keep your fingers crossed.

Spell Check

To echo some of Sarah's gripes about punctuation and the general demise of the written word, I would like to present one of the most annoying misuses of signage. Businesses that spell things wrong to be "catchy." For example, I went to a "concept lounge" (whatever this means) called Konfusion. This spelling was a mystery to me as I don't live in a city that starts with a K and there were no other obvious reasons for the misspelling. I also hate it when people write "thanx" - really? the extra letter was just too taxing and required the use of one letter? At work we had something called Kid's Kamp. You know, start the kids young and they'll never know how to spell. I think this just encourages people to forget how to spell. Don't shorten words, people. Avoid being cute, catchy, or any other thing that would require this kind of behavior.

Calling all techies...

My Linksys router is giving me fits, particularly when trying to connect to the Tivo. Now I have a new problem and the "wireless-B" will no longer light up. From what I have determined this means that I am not getting a wireless signal...thus no connection to upload data for Tivo. I am quickly losing my mind and I hope someone has a suggestion.

What do you deserve?

I believe that you can learn all of life's lessons by watching Dr. Phil or Friends. Today, I watched an episode of my favorite shrink and he had moochers on the show. These were men that were mooching off of the women in their lives. There was this one woman who had a great job and she was engaged to this guy that had no job, was an alcoholic and had no intention of changing. After Dr. Phil practically beat her over the head with logic she was still on the fence about marrying him. The conclusion that I (and Dr. Phil) made was that this is what she thinks she deserves. My question is why?
I think this is true for most people. I know that I think that I am a bad person sometimes and that I don't always deserve good things. When you don't think you deserve good things then you don't get good things, see? I need to change how I feel about things and start believing that I deserve better. Where these thoughts come from, I'm not sure, but I can at least recognize the problem. Dr. Phil would tell me that I need to have "right thinking" because what I have going on right now "ain't working for me."
I don't want ya'll to think that I sit around thinking these things all the time, but it is something I'm aware of and I am determined to think I deserve better. You do, too.

Mariah Carey Looks Weird

Honestly, I don't feel like I have to elaborate on this but I shall provide visual evidence to support my case. I remember when she really young and new to the music business and now she just looks odd. I know that when I watch entertainment programs or read magazines they talk about how hot she is but the only thing I see when I look at her now is that she looks like a tranny. Okay, a tranny with fantastic tits.

Black Tuesday

There are few days in history that have been dubbed "black" but there is only one of these days that is so awful and contrived that it divides the world into two sets of people. The haves and the have nots. Yes, I am referring to the "holiday" known to many as Valentine's Day. Perhaps, if I was one of the 'haves' I would not be so down on this day, but I'm not so you aren't going to get some sort of lovey dovey bullsh*t tribute to that special guy in my life. The following is my assessment of this pointless day.

Honoring St. Valentine? What exactly did he do? Nothing, I tell you. According to the Catholic encyclopedia it is more the fault of Chaucer and something he wrote, not anything that Valentine did. Plus, he was a priest - you know the profession known for romance. Ha.

An actual massacre occurred on this day. If this doesn't prove the bad aura surrounding this day, nothing will.

St. Patrick's Day? Now, that's a holiday. Valentine's Day? Not so much. Trust me, I worked in a card store for four years and the rumor that it is just a made up holiday is true. St. Patty's Day is a holiday meant to be enjoyed by everyone and it puts beer on the pedestal it deserves.

It's bad for you. All that candy just rots your teeth. Just think about the people alone on this holiday (ahem, for example, me), I will probably be buried under a moutain of tiny foil wrappers by midnight and not even know what happened.

My First Great Disappointment

(Today's post was inspired by an episode of Larry King Live featuring a reunion of the Growing Pains cast)

...was Kirk Cameron. I had such a crush on him as a kid because he was cute, funny, and a little bit naughty. I have already remarked that I am attracted to bad boys and he was the epitome of a "safe" bad boy. Then he got Jesus. He decided that he was too pious for the show and some of the "risky" plotlines. Remember that Playmate Julie? He was a prude and didn't want her on the show anymore. Oh well. I know this isn't a tragedy, but I was quite smitten with him at the time. I remember that I asked my mom for some Kirk Cameron pictures and she went to the book sale at school and came home with a Michael J. Fox magazine. Not the same, people. Not the same at all. I guess this post really shows my age, huh? Let's face it, my love of bad television is well known and I embrace it.

It started off as a normal day, then...

My transmission decided to conk out. I drove to Nashville Thursday night and got home around 11:30. I got up at the crack a** of dawn b/c my dad never sleeps late and Teddy wanted outside. We went to get coffee at a local bagel place and then we were off to get my car's emissions checked (you have to do this in order to get your tags renewed in TN - don't ask why I haven't switched over to AL tags). I kept thinking the car was having trouble shifting gears, but nothing major. About a mile from the testing center, my "check engine soon" light came on and when I got the emissions checked the car failed. Great. I then drove the car to a local repair shop and they said they figured that the problem was the transmission and they didn't "do" transmissions. I got back in the car and discovered that my car was not interested in going in reverse anymore. We drove back to the house to get dad's car and then drove to the dealership and had the tech look at it. Long story a bit shorter - my car was pronounced terminally ill and too expensive to resucitate. Let the car shopping begin...We tried several dealerships, but I let my dad and brother do most of the browsing while I weighed in with intelligent comments such as "ick. Looks like a grandma's car." or "I make fun of people driving PT Cruisers" also "ummm, red is just asking the police to pull you over" a couple of "what would I do with a convertible, it would probably just leak and my hair would get all tangled." and finally "eh. I just want something that will get me from here to there." So I finally settled on this:

Click to see my new 2006 car. It's the royal blue. Don't worry, I'm not going to go all "2 Fast 2 Furious" and get nitrous and a black light. Very sedate gray interior, a few bells, a couple of whistles. I am aiming to drive this for many, many, many years. Get used to the look.

The Perfect Analogy for My Life

I got my two diplomas in the mail over the weekend. Very exciting! I opened the first one and it had my full name and my degree on it - Masters of Library and Information Sciences - and it was very nice to look at. I opened the second envelope and it had my full name and my degree on it -Masters of Library and Information Sciences - and it was...wait a sec. Two diplomas saying the exact same thing? Crap. It seems that this always happens in my life. Things go pretty well except for one thing. It can never perfectly work out. I was glad to get my hands on the diploma, but it was a bit disappointing. Partially, because I only got one and also because, as Jenny so eloquently pointed out, they looked like they just printed them out on their home printer. It was not all that nice. I wanted some sort of embossed printing or an official seal. Nope, just regular script writing and photocopied signatures. Whoop-dee-doo. I might as well have gone to the online University of Phoenix and gotten my degree in gunsmithing.

One time...

I killed Jenny. She doesn't like it when I tell this story, but it's pretty funny (well, when it's not you, I guess). As I have mentioned previously, I like playing The Sims game and I have named characters after myself and other people I know. One of these characters was named after Jenny and she was married to Kasey Kahne (her NASCAR love) and they were living a life of luxury and had a beautiful home. Then tragedy struck. Jenny was swimming one afternoon and someone took away the pool ladder and she swam and swam and swam...you see where this is going, don't you? She drowned. The "someone" that removed the ladder was me. I'm not really sure why I did it. Curious I guess. I created a new character named Jenny, but it's just not the same. Jenny keeps reminding me of that...

Well, that's it, ya'll...

I received some very exciting news from my friend Sean O'. Apparently there will be NASCAR themed Harlequin Romance novels published. Nope, I was not part of the focus group these people consulted, but there must be an entire contingent of women out there that have the same interests that I do. This is fantastic! Finally, I can read a mindless novel about the things I love most. I have already tried to incorporate a fictional NASCAR scenario into my life through The Sims game. I love this game and happened to name two of the characters Katie and Dale Jr. and they happen to be married and live in a fabulous mansion. No reason for this, really, just a coincidence. Some people will call this a break with reality, but I call it being psychic and having the ability to predict the future. Who's coming to visit me at my palatial estate?

This Morning

I had to open this morning. To give you an idea of what this means, I need to shower the night before and be out of bed around 3:45 a.m. I leave my apartment around 4:10 and get to work around 4:20 - ten minutes early. This is typically what happens. Today I rolled over and looked at my clock (which is set 14 minutes fast) and saw that it said 4:36. S-H-*-T! This is an account of what happened:

I jumped out of bed muttering "sh*t, sh*t, sh*t, sh*t." I was so confused and Tedddy was laying in bed, bleary eyed, and watching my stumbling around. I got him out of bed and took him outside for his extremely early constitutional and then rushed back inside to put a work shirt on and my contacts in (yes, I was still wearing my p.j. bottoms - I look so hot right now...). I got in my car and the clock read 4:26 - yes, people, a miracle on earth. I was up, out of bed, somewhat dressed, and in my car in 4 minutes. I drove only fractionally above the speed limit and got to work at 4:33.

11 Minutes. That's how it's done.

10 Little Things I'm Grateful For:

I know I gripe alot on this blog and it occurred to me that I should also throw in some positive stuff so here it is.

Ten Little Things I'm Grateful For

10. How good the "cool side" of the pillow feels when you turn it over while you are trying to fall asleep.
9. When someone says "I love you" first because then it feels like they really do.
8. When Teddy sits in my lap and stares adoringly at his favorite person (me).
7. Making other people laugh.
6. Getting an unexpected email or letter in the mail (which is quite rare in this day and age).
5. Having a random customer at work tell me they think I do a good job.
4. Finding a movie on television that I haven't seen in a while and wanted to see.
3. Feeling needed and necessary by my friends and family.
2. When little kids say they think I'm nice, cool, or pretty.
1. Having a great family, great friends, and a warm, safe home, particularly when so many people don't. (I know this isn't "little" but it still needed to be acknowledged.)

That's it. Hope you have 10 little things you're grateful for.

boo-hoo. Oh, just shut up!

Extreme Intoxication+Desperation for Hot Pockets to finish cooking in microwave

=Self-loathing post that should be ignored

Things always look better in the light of day and when you are almost sober.

Odd Man Out

First, to Baby Makes Three - I am going to answer the questions from being "tagged", but I am a little too intoxicated to do that so...

I kind of felt like the ugly stepsister tonight. Sadly enough, I don't actually have sisters, step or not, but I still felt it.

We were at a club and I felt like the ugly friend that people kept shoving off to other people. It was a great feeling.

I am pretty sure this is what rock bottom may feel like. J/k. kinda

I love Rules

It's true. I love rules, I think most rules serve important purposes and I try to follow most of them. This is particularly true for my job. There are a billion rules and standards that they try to enforce and I mostly follow them with the exception of two: you can only wear two earrings (I have seven) and tuck your shirt in (dream on). I used to like to think I was someone who liked to throw caution to the wind, but let's face it: I throw no caution at no wind. One of the reasons why I like rules is that they generally make your life easier and somewhat safer. People who don't follow the rules at work, employees and customers alike, drive me insane. I have the fact that my fellow employees don't follow the rules thrown in my face everyday by customers and my only response is something along the lines of "Sorry, I guess I'm the only observant one around here - pay up." I fear authority - the police in particular. I'm such a wimp, but I don't care. So that's my dirty little secret.

Working on Saturday mornings should be illegal

I am currently at work and miserable. I have received this brief respite and decided to post about the torture. I slept really badly last night and got up around 7 this morning to shower and get ready for work. No more of this. I am putting my foot down about having to work on Saturday mornings. It is cruel and unusual punishment. Luckily, I am applying for a job on Monday morning so wish me good luck. I need it. Must leave this job. Must escape.

Finally.

The people who make my favorite beverage (Bud Light) have decided to appeal to the more cultered beer drinkers (me). These people don't need to pay high priced advertising firms for this information, they just need to consult experienced beer drinkers such as myself. I have to admit that my brand loyalty stems from my love of Dale Jr., but that is for another time (only 30 days until the Daytona 500 - get excited!). Beer drinkers unite!

I'm pretty sure if I got a face transplant the last thing I would be doing is

lighting up a burning stick near the new goods. I have read on cnn.com and yahoo.com that the French lady that got the first face transplant has taken up smoking again. After surviving an attack by her own dog, this lady seems bent on shortening her life in other ways. I realize I am a confirmed non-smoker, but it seems to me if I happened to be the person who got my face transplanted on, I would be taking care of it. That would include bans on skydiving, skateboarding, firefighting, dog-catching, and smoking. Nothing that has the potential to melt off my new mug is going anywhere near me. Oh well, call me crazy.

I'm off to work, but I figured I could squeeze in a post...

Honestly, I don't have much to say aside from the fact that I love long weekends, but they certainly make going back to work extremely hard. My weekend was pretty low key except for a trip to T-town with Jenny to see an old friend of hers. I had a good time, but it ocurred to me about half way through the evening that I am over the whole college scene. We went to a bar where the crowd was probably 95% undergrad and I was reminded of my years in college. Unfortunately, I don't really have any desire to go back to college so the experience was a bit "trying." I had a good time with Jenny and her friend, but I would have enjoyed it more had the crowd been a bit older. I am not too keen on hanging out with 19 and 20 year olds in a bar. The only thing I kept thinking was "umm, is it just me, or are they not old enough to be here?" Yep, that's right people, I've turned into a curmudgeon in my old age. Great. What's next? Drinking Ensure to get all of my daily nutrients and watching The Weather Channel because I think it's entertainment?

happiness

In a previous post I mentioned my latest concentration on my childhood and some of my favorite memories. With this in mind, I have read about several scientific articles that discuss the importance of writing down favorite memories and the link to happiness. I have decided to share one of my favorite stories from when I was a kid.

I was in Louisiana visiting some of my cousins when I was probably about four or five. I only have vague memories of this incident, but the following event has been rehashed and laughed about for years (as have many of my exploits when I was a kid). My cousin T. was about three years older than me and quite wise. We were about to leave after our visit and T. told me to "give her a smack." I looked at her strangely and asked her to repeat her request. Once again, she said "give me a smack." Although I thought this was a strange request, I decided to comply. I pulled my hand back and slapped her upside the head. This was a classic case of miscommunication and T. was quite unhappy with me. My father and mother were also horrified because they did not hear the exchange between T. and I and they just assumed that I had developed some sort of anger management problem and taken to domestic violence. I was later informed that "a smack" could be interpreted as a kiss. Not my problem, but I will admit that things have never really been the same between T. and I. From that day forward every time I visit this side of the family they always discuss my abusive side and my willingness to follow directions regardless of the level of inappropriateness. Next week I shall share my love of the family toilet and my interest in seeing what would and would not flush (we had a plumber on retainer)...

Another observation

You know those people that they film from the neck down during news stories about obesity? I cannot imagine turning on the television and watching a show and realize that my fat ass is plastered across the screen. With as many stories as they do about overweight people you have got to figure this has happened to someone. I'm sorry, I really don't care how thin you are - when you're schlepping around a bunch of packages from shopping or just bumming around people can look pretty bad. Filming someone from behind while they trundle down the street just isn't fair. I officially offer my sympathy and outrage for anyone who has been filmed anonymously because they're fat.

Can't sleep

It takes the average human seven minutes to fall alseep. It takes the average me about 10 times that long. I was in bed just moments ago letting various thoughts and worries run through my head and create a knot in my stomach. I think another part of my sleep problem is my lack of patience just to lay around waiting to fall asleep. I know that Jenny actually likes to lay around and wait to fall alseep. This is also the girl, that if she sits too still after 9 p.m., is off to dreamland in a minute and thirty seconds flat (and those dreams of hers, don't get me started). I find that I like to review the events of the day or the things I need to accomplish in the coming days while waiting for sleepiness to come. All I end up doing is getting myself stirred up and worried about a bunch of stuff I can't control. Call it the legacy of Dorothy G. (my mom) - a professional worrier if there ever was one. She loved to wring her hands (literally) and plan for the worst. If it was raining and anyone in my family went out in it, pneumonia was sure to follow. Try on a hat in a department store - you might as well invite lice to take up residence in your hair. Out after nine? Only rapists and murderers are out after this time (Is that you, Peyton?). Eating oysters during months with no "R" in the name (May, June, July, August) was just asking for some sort of debilitating neuro-muscular disease to come upon you. And on, and on, and on. The way the rest of the family dealt with this was to ridicule her (not in a mean way, more like a "she's just the crazy lady who lives in the attic" way) and flaunt our risk-filled lives. My mom always said that Lee's family (I have mentioned Lee several times in this blog) could eat poisonous mushrooms and play in the middle of the street and never get hurt, but my family could be extremely careful and risk life and limb by walking out of our front door. Sadly, D.G. had a point. I, as many of you know, am pretty accident prone (umm, two knee surgeries, hit by a car, numerous trips to the emergency room, etc) and Lee has been to the doctor about twice in her entire life. She's too damn healthy. I guess I come from weak stock and her lineage is more sturdy, oxen-like (not that she or anyone else in her family resembles an ox or any other sort of draft animal). I guess I digressed a bit in this post, but hopefully my mind is a little more clear and I can head to bed with little trouble.

Here's my gripe.

Answer the g.d. phone. Or just call back. I am just about at the end of my rope when it comes to phone calls and some of my friends. Hey, I understand when you are busy with work, school, other pressing business, but if you can't manage to call me back within a month (not an exaggeration) of my calling you - then that's a problem. I'm not sure if I'm the only person that this happens to, but I have a sneaking suspicion that I am not alone in this irritation. My new remedy for this is erasing the number in my cell phone. Considering I don't remember most of the numbers in my contacts list, this is a pretty effective method.

And that is all I have to say on this subject. Oh yeah, and I just took two numbers out of my contacts list.

Looking back...

I know that I have previously revealed my love for cheesy television, but I did not reveal one of the reasons why I love such programming. I like watching these shows partly because they remind of when I was younger. It's not that I would like to go back in time and be a little kid anymore, but I think I would like to live a couple of days like a kid with the knowledge I have today. Think about it, you could be a senior in high school, have all of the knowledge you have right now and approach things differently. I would not be as stressed out as I was when I was 17 or 18. I could use my experience as an adult and just enjoy life. One of my secrets is to be able to go back to a time when I lived at home with my mom and dad and just went to school and hung out with my friends. Don't worry, I haven't regressed to childhood, I'm just curious about how life would be. I think some of these feelings may stem from the fact that my mom was around when I was younger and I miss her. I wouldn't change the freedom I have today for the kind of control that was wielded over my life when I was at home. I guess I just feel a little intimidated by the responsibility of my present life.

Dear Lord, imagine if I was married and had kids? Someone asked me if I had "any of my own" (kids that is) and I had to repress a shudder. It's not because I don't want kids, I do, but it is more like I can't imagine being able to raise another human being. With that being said(or written) I am sending extremely positive thoughts to BabyMakesThree (her link is found to your left). Hope this wasn't too depressing and I hope that I'm not alone in my thoughts.

Diet update and general audience poll:

As of today I have lost a total of five pounds. I may have lost a little more than that, but five is all I am claiming as of right now. The week wasn't too hard. I remember why I like eating healthy and generally being better to myself: I am in a good mood and I feel physically better. I hope everyone else is accomplishing this year's goal and this get's me to another thing I wanted to discuss.

I am looking to spice up my life and try new things. I like going to see movies, but I would like to get out of my apartment to do something other than going to work, a movie, or dinner. Any suggestions? Maybe a hike would be in order? I am not too outdoor-sy. I find bugs repulsive and nature in general to be of a questionable value. I used to enjoy camping when I was a kid, but I am just not that interested since I became a snake and other vicious creatures fearing adult. What other activities do you engage in aside from the usual work (or school), dinner, movie routine? I am determined to start 2006 out fresh and this takes dedication and imagination.

Heath and Jake make a good couple

I saw Brokeback Mountain last night and it was excellent. The only thing I didn't enjoy about it was the front row seats we were forced to sit in because the movie was sold out. It was a packed house and the audience was really well-behaved - which is a rarity these days. I suggest everyone go see this movie if they love a heartfelt, romantic story. I know this movie is supposed to be controversial, but after a while in the movie you just tend to see it as a love story between two conflicted people. The gay thing is kind of an afterthought. If you would like to see a gay romantic comedy you should see All Over the Guy. It's a cute movie and I have a crush on one of the guys in the movie. Plus, there's a really hot love scene. Anyway, I digress and my mind is quickly heading for the gutter.

A Million Little Pieces...of candy?

I just finished reading James Frey's A Million Little Pieces and I am struck by the similarities between drug addiction and food addiction. Although I have never passed out in a plate of french fries or a bowl of ice cream, Frey's descriptions of his thoughts and cravings are familiar. Food is so much more to me than just nurishment. It always has been. I know everyone has different challenges that they face, but this is by far my most daunting. I'm feeling good right now. I have been following a healthy eating plan and that takes a lot of (no pun intended) weight off my mind. I'm going to work out tonight after work and have a healthy dinner. Hope everyone else is doing well. I will be sure to think of other things besides this diet to talk about in the next few posts. Just bear with me :)

Day Two

Just an update on my resolution. I am still sore from my workout yesterday. I find it so frustrating that I let myself get into such bad shape again. I didn't work out today partly because I was too sore and I had to get up at 3:45 a.m. to get to work at 4:30 and was pretty beat by the time I got off from my second shift. Anyhoo, the eating has been going well. I am very full after my dinner of steamed cabbage, cous cous, and a Lean Cuisine. Just a note, Lean Cuisine has come out with a new line of panini's and they are delicious! Mmmm-mmm. Well, I am off to bed and hope everyone is doing well in the new year.

It's soooooo F*ckin' Cliche...

Guess what my #1 New Year's resolution is? Get healthy and lose a crapload of weight. I want to accomplish several other things over the course of 2006, but weight is my most important thing. Anyone who knows me fairly well realizes that this is one thing that I have struggled with for YEARS. Here is the ugly, honest account of the childhood of a fat kid:

- I realized I was a bigger than other kids in kindergarten
- the various and numerous comments from strangers and relatives about my weight and my plans for losing it (ummm, thanks, apparently they believed that Katieland is devoid of mirrors)
- Attempted and failed practically every diet known to man
- lost and gained enough weight to boggle my mind, let alone yours

I could go on, but I have decided not to bore you. Here's the bottom line: I'm trying again and I have the new determination that I would like to live past the age of 35. I come from a family that has managed to create a genetic link to most every disease known to man. It is amazing that I am still kicking to this day.

A little too honest people, but that's the way it is.

The New Year's Eve Plan

This is what I am doing to usher in the new year:

I am writing down all of the crappy things that have happened this year on separate pieces of paper. All the bad things, thoughts, deeds, actions, etc. Starting a small, controlled fire, and burning each one. Kind of a cleansing ritual for 2006. This is my way of starting off the year fresh and open for new things and bettering myself. Cheers!

That's me. What are/did ya'll do for the holiday?

Here's the big secret

I am here to let you people know something really important. Although I love holidays (as evidenced by my constant harping about Christ's birthday) there are a couple that I find extremely overhyped and I refuse to participate one year longer. The first holiday on my list? New Year's Eve. This is the night. You know, the one that is supposed to be loads of fun and crazy. Bullsh*t. All you end up doing is getting yourself excited and dressed up for some lame party that never lives up to its hype and you end up wishing you had stayed in your p.j.'s and relaxed at home. This year I am skipping all of this and hanging with a few friends in my p.j.'s, watching movies, getting drunk on alcohol I bought myself and didn't pay a 100% markup on, and being low key. That's it. This is my way to avoid getting all excited about stuff that won't happen. It's the perfect plan. I can't be disappointed. Do what you want, but I suggest just letting things happen as they may and be excited about the little things.

I alluded to this earlier, but I have a special plan for the holiday. I am not ready to reveal my idea just yet, but I am going to keep everyone updated.

And what did Santa bring you this year?

Well, Santa brought me cold, hard cash. Just what I wanted!! I also got a coffee pot with a timer so the coffee will be made when I get up in the morning - Magic! I also got a pasta pot/steamer combination which I also asked for. I got the Peanuts Christmas cd and the 40th anniversary tribute cd from my brother's girlfriend. It was awesome because I almost bought it earlier in the week. Always good to save money. I got other odds n' ends so Christmas was a success! I hope everyone else had a good holiday as well.

What was your favorite present this year?

No wings, no hands, half a face.

This is what happens when your enterprising father decides to attempt to hang the Christmas angel with the fireplace tongs. This is the type of thing that occurs to men and not women. I would NEVER have thought that precariously clutching the angel between a chosen tool of a fireplace set would be the PERFECT way to get the angel on top of the tree. I think that may be what a ladder is for. But don't ask me, I just visit this place from time to time. Another angel is on top of the tree, but don't get too hopeful. This angel is one that I made circa 1986 out of red crinkly paper, a twist tie, a doily, and a styrofoam ball. I have to admit she looks pretty good on top of our strange tree. A perfect addition to the gimp.

On the tree decorating front, we have abandoned our original idea (my father's, of course) of throwing the lights toward the front of the tree and seeing what happens. My brother and I actually pulled the tree away from the corner and wrapped lights around the entire thing. Coni, Chris' girlfriend, and I put the decorations up and it looks pretty damn good- if I do say so myself. We put a lot of ornaments on, probably close to 200. There are several bare spots (as mentioned in the previous post), but we have lots of icicle decorations and they fill the blank spaces well. If I can find a USB cable for the digital camera I will post a picture. I hope everyone is enjoying their holiday and I will speak or email all of you soon.

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah and whatever else anyone is celebrating!

We're getting down to the finish line...

So Christmas is one week away and I am just checking in on everybody. Today, I drove from Birmingham to Nashville with Lee and then I met up at the house with my family and we went to cut down the now infamous Christmas tree. We went to our friend's farm and looked at their trees. Let me set the scene. Our family friends got into growing Christmas trees several years ago and did not really do much investigation into how one goes about accomplishing this task. Apparently, they planted the trees too close together so some of the trees did not get adequate sunlight or room to grow. The trees were also not trimmed during their initial growth so they have, um, interesting shapes. There were more than a few Charlie Brown Christmas trees. Also some really lopsided trees and some trees with branches on just one side. We searched through dozens of trees and finally picked one that was not too bad. It was pretty full and very green. We sawed it down and then hauled it home. We cut off some branches and put it in the tree stand and put it inside.

Have you ever seen National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation? Remember how the tree is a bit too large for the house. Yup. Same problem. We have fairly tall ceilings, but the tree was too big so my brother cut off some of the branches at the top. I don't care if it does look a little gimpy. It's our tree.

Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas to me...

Mmmm-mmmm good.

Last Night...

I went out with some friends from school and had a very good time! I drank too much and had a wee hangover this morning, but all in all it was a fun evening. We went to Surin (the local Thai restaurant for those not in the know) and then we went to a local coffee house that serves liquor - you people know I wouldn't be having caffeine that late at night or going to a place where there were no adult beverages - Madness! I think it must have been open mic night and there was this one guy singing who looked like John C. Reilly. It took my friend Rachel B. and I a little while to figure out who he looked like, but that was it. He was dressed in faded blue jeans (circa 1992) and a polo shirt (also circa 1992 or thereabouts). Basically about as white bread as you get. His first song choice? Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues. Quite a study in contrasts. I was waiting for him to launch into Marilyn Manson's Personal Jesus...

There it is.

Well, I finished my last exam and I figure things went fine. I guess I am a graduate. Hmmm.

Tuesday, December 13, 2005

I would prefer not to study, so...

Tomorrow is my last exam and I don't want to study for it. So I have decided to post about something I observed over the weekend.

I like to watch House Hunters on HGTV. I like to assess people's taste and to see the different kinds of houses that are out there. Anyhoo, I had taped an episode of the show and this couple was looking for a houseboat. Yes, a houseboat. I don't get them. To me they're scary and small. The couple on the show was looking for said houseboat in Seattle and they were planning on using it as a weekend vacation home. The couple's primary home was a showplace and certainly cost several million dollars. The boat they were looking to purchase was going to run them $500,000+. Hmmm. This is when you know someone has too much money. You know what the woman said that she was looking for in a potential houseboat? She wanted "intimacy with the water." I'm not sure what this means, but I don't like it. It makes me nervous that you can go to bed and wake up to find your house on the bottom of a body of water. Well, I guess you wouldn't wake up in case of this event, but you get my drift. Too transient for my tastes. It reminds me of the time that I was interning in this little tiny town in Arkansas and the local bank was in a trailer. In my opinion, anything that can be moved easily should not be the location for anyone's life savings.

Christmas Update #3

Hi Everybody! This is your regular Christmas Check-up. How is everyone coming in their quest to find the holiday spirit? Mine is going quite well. I am maintaining my current level of cheer and raising the bar a tiny bit everyday. I expect the same out of you. Happy Christmas' don't just create themselves. You have to work at it. I want to hear details on everyone's progress. Here's a little story on how my grinch (my dad) almost stole Christmas this year:

I don't get up early as a rule. I have tried to fight this natural instinct and it just ain't working. My family knows this and so do most of my friends. Anyhoo, moving on, I got up to take Teddy for his morning constitutional yesterday (Sat.) at 7:45 because he IS an early riser and his personal needs take precedence, especially if I don't want him to pee inside. As a habit, I usually check my phone when I get up for this quick jaunt outside to see if anyone has called in the night or early in the morning. Most of the times they haven't, and it was no different yesterday. I go back to sleep and finally get my lazy ass out of bed around 11. I check my phone and there is a missed phone call at 8:22 from my brother. I figure something must be up b/c he knows I would be asleep. I call and see what he wanted and it turns out my dad was trying to get him to agree to going ahead and picking out a tree and cutting it down before I got home and the call was to see if I would MIND (btw, we have friends who own a Christmas tree farm and they are letting us pick and cut down our own tree this year - something I have been looking forward to for months). My brother and his girlfriend tried to tell my dad that I would probably mind and they finally talked him out of cutting it down. Good thing. If I had come home and found a Christmas tree already up and decorated (dad's other plan for yesterday) I would have burned that motherf*cker down. period. Good thing for my bro and his girl or I would have been super irritated at dear old dad. Christmas is still intact. Not to worry.

Girls Suck.

Yeah, I know, I'm a girl, but I just wish I could get it together.

What am I talking about?

Not to get too specific (to spare my pride) I just seem to make the same mistakes over and over again. With men, with friends, with everything. I vow to do better, but I just don't. Ugh. What's wrong with me? Oh well. This is why the whole man sabbatical started. Well, here's the big announcement: Man Sabbatical 2005 is officially over. This doesn't mean that I have acted on anything, but people, I've got needs. Here is how 2006 is going to differ from 2005:

-I am going to take better care of myself
-I am going to open myself up to new things
-I am going to put myself out there (hush, you people with dirty minds) I mean I am going to finally act on feelings that I have instead of wishing they would go away
-I am going to seriously LOOK and FIND a REAL job

Here's the catch: When I say that 2006 will differ from 2005 I mean that this will take place as of January 1st. No sooner. I need a break and self improvement can be a drag. After my last exam (Wednesday) I am ON A BREAK. Plus, I've got plans for ringing in the new year.

That's for another post.

two things

1. Why is it that everytime someone goes to a strip club on t.v. the women are wearing something closer to a bikini than their birthday suit. I understand that you can't just show anything on television and that baring certain things is prohibited, but I always think the characters on the t.v. show are just going to crappy strip clubs. Hell, if I'm going to go to some sleazy strip joint there better be somethin' nekkid.

2. I just saw one of the Victoria's Secret Christmas commercials and this brings me to another observation. They (the models) are wandering the streets in tiny little lingerie. People, it's cold out there (in most places around the country) and these women need to put on some jackets or at least a scarf. Also, I love how the people the models pass on the street just look at them like it is normal for amazon-like women to prance around the street in a negligee.

Oh well. Only in America.

Who are we kidding?

Back to an oldie, but goodie...

When I am watching QVC and I see the various the stuff they are peddling, I think to myself "who actually thinks this looks good?" For example, the selection of jewelry is, for lack of a better word...stunning. Not the good kind of stunning. More like: "Good Lord! Apparently Tammy Faye Bakker has come out with her on line of craptacular accessories!" Another thing is the fact that QVC likes to sell things like Diamonique or Platinum-like things. It's fine, if you want to sell fake diamonds, but do they have to look like this? Why not something a little smaller and less Liberace-like...

I have an assignment for everyone: You must spend a couple of minutes today looking at the QVC website. Absolutely Breathtaking!

Observation

Is this not the most pointless endeavor? For those of you who are still in the midst of the fall/winter combo, leaves are everywhere. I find myself watching several landscapers, homeowners, and generally random people wielding the most pointless invention ever: the leaf blower. You just blow the damn things around and that is it. I drove by a guy blowing leaves off of an office park grounds and into the street. I drove by and the wind from my car blew the leaves back onto the grass. Again, he blew the leaves back into the road and once again another car came along and undid all of his pointless work. After a careful assessment I have decided to provide anyone contemplating a leaf blower purchase reasons not to do so:

1. They are just a big broken vacumn cleaner
2. They are horrible for your hearing
3. All they do is blow leaves onto someone else's property
4. They are stupid
5. I mock anyone who owns one or hires anyone to wield such an awful excuse for lawn equipment.

So what have we learned today, class?

here it is, people

The countdown to graduation. For the past few months I have been dreading the last of my college career and the work that would accompany it, but I have really been finishing up a lot of my work (that has turned out to be more busy work than anything) and it occurs to me it is like a lot of other things in my life. I wish that things would come quickly, but when they get here I wish things would slow down.

Don't get me wrong. I want to graduate, but there is a lot that goes along with that.

Is it just me, or were you under the impression (either in high school or early college) that you would magically "know" what you wanted to do when you were done with school?

If someone is reading this and has not graduated from college, I've got some truths for you to swallow:

-You will never "know" when you officially grow up, somehow it just happens
-College does not guarantee that you will be on a career path
*This is the most important*
-Things will work out.

Wisdom from Madame Katie.

Feelin' Social

Taking a page from SGM, I am going to have some guest contributors:

Me: Here we are hanging at my little 'ole apartment and I have several friends over. Beer, Tivo, a bad movie (Melinda and Melinda - whoever said this was a good movie was wrong), and discussing Friendster. I am turning this over to my next guest:

RJ: Well, I'm a big V. This is my first time 'blogging.' Katie assured me it wouldn't hurt, but not to be scared if there's a little blood afterwards. It's natural. Anyways, Katie promised us some Harold and Kumar but she couldn't deliver. It's sort of sad because I was all excited for some hot NPH action, but I guess I'll have to settle for Cartmen, Kyle, Stan and Kenny. So it goes. Well, this wasn't as unpleasant as I feared it might be--plus it only lasted a couple minutes. Later!

SOD (o my!): Katie is a merciless taskmistress. With her, it's just output, with no regard for our well-being. Tonight is good fun, but it pales in comparison to the last outing between Katie and RJ, an all-girls "slumber party" that apparently involved copious quantities of alcohol and partial nudity. Of course, now that there are two members of the male persuasion here, tonight has taken a turn towards the wholesome. Phooey.

JAH: This is what happens when the sober people go first. They say funny and clever things, and then the drunk folks are left to follow with incoherent comments. So, I will spare you all. I am not particulary funny or particularly witty, so I will simply say, in the words of the infamous Parker Posey, "lick me all of you." Just kidding...wouldn't want to be offensive. Peace and love.

ROACH: First of all I have to piss. Like a rachehorse. Moving on, I like to lick yet I think that my friends wouldn't appreciate it for some reason. Maybe it's because I have some sort of ooze dripping forth from my mouth, but that is beside the point. I am the last to go and I have found that this is the position that is the most difficult to perform in. All of the pressure is on you and there is nothing that I can say that will compete with the things that all of these creative people haven't already said. Well hell...I just pissed my pants and I don't think that any of these people realize it yet. It isn't the first time that I've pissed myself as an adult, but I am not proud of that fact. I am just stating fact. Sometimes you just can't control your bladder and you get adult diapers. Thank God for Depends. If it weren't for them then Katie's chair, that is indeed fabric, would be soaked in all of my wetness. So much for having to piss. I think I have shared enough for the next two years, but something is telling me that I will still be sharing more in the near future.

And here it is. These are my friends and I am proud of them. Hope this provided some entertainment. Peace out, M*therf*ckers!

The Hand of God

Well, here it is. Today, I was at my dead end job and I felt the presence of God and he said something akin to "what the hell are you doing?!"

A little background to set the scene. I am terribly afraid of finishing my last semester in school and officially becoming an "adult" (whatever that means). I applied and interviewed for a job and didn't get it. Fine. I have had to tell several people that "no, I did not get the job, but thanks for inquiring." Nothing boosts the ego quite like this, let me tell you. I have not applied anywhere since, despite good intentions. I'm not really sure why, I guess I am just lacking any sort of motivation. So sue me. Now we come to the hand of God.

I found myself at my usual post. I was sitting working on a paper due for class when I was informed that I was expected to make some nametags for an upcoming holiday party. Now, don't get me wrong, you people know I love anything related to the holidays, but this was ridiculous. They (I shall not name names) wanted me to cut out xeroxed copies of a cheap pencil drawing that was oversized, poorly drawn, cheap, and tacky. I cut and pasted these little ugly squares of tastelessness to posterboard and could practically feel myself not living up to my potential. I have made quite a career of not fulfilling expectations, but this was just plain wrong. I am about to have two Masters degrees and I am a glorified kindergartener? Sh*t I was never good at pasting things when I was little and my talents certainly haven't gotten better since. Was this a message from God? Was he trying to convey his utmost disappointment and horror that I am wasting any sort of knowledge on frustrating menial tasks? ugh.

Where did it go so wrong?

The King

I have noticed that several of my last posts have been a bit negative so I have decided to dedicate several future posts to the topic of things I love.

Today's topic: Elvis Presley a.k.a. "The King of Rock n' Roll"

Things I love about Elvis: He was a southerner, great singer, awesome songs, cheesy movies, hot sex (at least between 1953-1971). Mmm-mmm good. I love watching Elvis and Me (tv movie from the late 80s that depicted his life with Priscilla) when it comes on Lifetime or CMT close to his birthday or the date of his death. I know an awful lot about him and he joins a short list of people that I am absolutely FASCINATED by. He was a complex, flawed, generous, caring, conflicted, successful, and talented person - to name a few qualities. I also think I relate to him because he struggled with his weight in his 30s and 40s. He died tragically and has continued to garner fans close to 30 years after his death.

Another movie review...

I saw Walk the Line this weekend and it was great! Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon were awesome and their singing was quite good. I highly recommend this movie to anyone, you don't even have to be a big Johnny Cash fan. It's just a good story. On a related note, I would like to discuss something that this movie made me ponder:

Bad Boys.

Why do we (girls, women, old women, gay men...) love bad boys? Johnny was a bad boy for many years of his life and I gotta say it was a little sexy (maybe not when he was strung out on uppers, but you get my drift). I have always found someone with a little dark side to be quite attractive. Why can't I like nice guys? Why can't you? I think nice guys are overlooked during their 20s and highly sought after in their 30s and 40s. Should I start looking for a nice guy now and settle for nice and not sparks? Hmmm. It is something to think about.

In my heart, I knew it was coming...

As you all have heard, Nick and Jessica are over. I'll admit I'm bummed. I knew that it was going to happen, but I really wanted to believe they would be happy together. I predicted this in the first season of Newlyweds, but I didn't want to see it come to fruition. It's a sad day, my friends (shall we all bow our heads?).
I have already aknowledged that I have an obsession with some celebrities' lives and I take things kind of personally. I know I need to learn to accept the decisions these people make with their own lives, but still...

Farewell, Nick.
Adieu, Jessica.
It will never be the same.

I CAN READ

This is what I feel like shouting to several professors and other people who believe in reading to you. For example, one professor loves to do PowerPoint and then read the slides to you for HOURS. It drives me insane. I have been in school for 246 years and I am quite capable of reading for myself. As Jenny is fond of saying, PowerPoint is a license to be boring. My fellow students are also guilty of reading to people who can do it on their own. Another thing that gets on my nerves is a student droning on and on for 20-30 minutes when the presentation was supposed to last 5-10 minutes at the most. Brevity is a virtue that many people have lost. It is literally like torture to me. Ugh. Sometimes I picture myself piping up in the middle of class with something like "Shut up! Just shut the F*ck up! If you don't shut up, I will kill you. I will torture you like you are torturing me! Shut up, shut up, shut up!"

Ahhh, I feel better already!

Update: Christmas 2005

This is my update for how I am getting prepared for the Christmas season. Thanks to everyone for encouraging my goal for the year.

Here are the Christmas things I have watched on t.v.
1. Major Dad (charming and cheesy sitcom from the early '90s) - a "very special episode" that includes the necessary magic of Christmas and renewed belief in Santa.
2. Beverly Hills, 90210 - (no need for explanation, right?) Episode from season four, the first year "the gang" was in college. Lots of good cheer and happiness. A must see, not the best 90210 Christmas episode, but cute.
3. QVC - I love watching this stuff. They are always talking about Christmas and are decorated for the holidays beginning in September. Super Christmas-y!

Other things I have done to get me in the mood for the holidays:
1. I wear Christmas socks almost every day
2. I wear my Christmas underwear several times a week (I have a lot to pick from)
3. I bought the tackiest, most fabulous Christmas tree (it kind of looks like this picture, but it's red!) for my apartment.
4. I bought an extremely tacky collection of Christmas ornaments to go with my fabulous tree. I will take a picture once it's decorated.
5. I made spiked hot apple cider. Mmmm-mmmm.

What have you done about getting in the mood? If you haven't done anything, you better get going!

Late? Selfish Little Sh*t.

I hate being late.

Late for appointments. Late for work. Late for class. Just plain late.

I was at work today and stuck there for 30 EXTRA minutes because some b*tch didn't leave her house in time to get to work on time. Dammit. I like being early for work so that I am able to take my time and not rush around. I like getting to class early so that I can take care of anything that needs to be accomplished before class. It is selfish and most people who are late tend to do it a lot. Why is it that you can consistently be late, but cannot consistently make an effort to get someplace on time. I think it shows a lack of respect for others and it drives me up the freakin' wall.

So admit it...are you on time or late? Different point of view from mine? Anyone want to play devil's advocate?

The Quacker Factory

After admitting to my love of bad '90s television, I feel like I can admit to just about anything. I like to watch QVC for hours on end during the holiday season. I think it is because it portrays life as you sometimes idealize it. You know, a cheerful fire in the fireplace, perfect Christmas decorations, and pretty gifts that "mom" or "grandma" would just love! Anyhoo, I am getting off of my topic for the day. There is one show that I love the most on this wonderful network. It is called The Quacker Factory and it is a fabulous example of cheesiness and what one can achieve with the Bedazzler. Jeanne Bice is the creator of these incredible clothes that include all of the sweaters that your second grade teacher used to wear for the various holidays of the year. People call in and say things like "quack, quack, Jeanne! I just LOVE your clothes! They're precious! I own all six!"
Examples of her fashion creations (credit to the QVC website - for those of you who are looking for the perfect Christmas gift this year):

A little something for Halloween or for Fall?
or
Teachers?
or
Just damn T-A-C-K-Y?

People, she calls herself the Head Quack. You gotta love it...

Scummy

This is my new catch-all descriptor for boys. I realize it is a generalization and not all boys are scummy, but the majority are and that is a fact of life.

How have I come to this conclusion?

-Although guys and girls are initially attracted to overall appearance and hotness level (don't lie, you know it's true - so don't try that "eyes" or "smile" bullsh*t), girls will usually become more attracted or less attracted based on personality. This is not true for guys - the girl can be an uber bitch, but uber hot and guys will put up with just about anything.
-Don't even get me started on the whole sex thing. I know girls do it too, but it is still more of a guy thing to sleep with anything that moves. And girls are the sluts? whatever.

Thoughts? Am I just being bitter or truthful? Both? (Honestly, I'd probably admit to both)

Viva Nashvegas!

I have just returned from the land of country music, family, and friends! Sorry I haven't updated in several days, but I have been busy seeing old friends and being lazy. Lee, my friend who has commented on this blog several times, just got back from her 3 1/2 year stint in Bolivia as a Peace Corps volunteer. She had plenty of amusing stories and I am amazed that she has been away from home for so long. I can't wait until Christmas and we can have our traditional Christmas morning (o.j. and a review of presents) between my family and hers. I also had dinner with my brother's new girlfriend! She is really nice and talented. I'm ready for them to get married...really. Oh well, I guess I will have to be patient. I want nieces and nephews, dammit! I also saw my goddaughter, Isabella, the sweetest little girl in Nashville (I am sure that her hugs and kisses have had no bearing on my feelings at all). I am ready to take on the last of my semester and graduate from school. I will have something more amusing to discuss tomorrow. 'Til then...

My name is Katie and I am addicted to cheesy '90s television

Well, I have had this blog for several months now and I feel like we know each other pretty well. I have shared numerous embarrassing habits and beliefs with ya'll and now I will reveal the most embarrassing of them all (I need to give Lydia props because she admitted her love of the early '80s sitcom Bosom Buddies). I love bad '90s television. Early, mid, late '90s - it doesn't matter I LOVE IT. Here is what is on the Tivo right now:

Major Dad
Beverly Hills, 90210
Grace Under Fire
Coach
Designing Women (this is a bit of a cheat as it appeared during the late '80s and early '90s)

I know what you may be thinking right now: "she has no taste in television." Well, I never claimed to have taste and anyone who has ever been in a room with me for longer than fifteen minutes will acknowledge that many of my tastes are lowbrow, i.e. Bud Light, Gross Out comedies, and cheesy music. Now that I have admitted this dark secret to you, what is your guilty pleasure?

Jake Gyllenhaal's Penis is my Muse

*Note: today's post is purely for the ladies or men who love men.*

Ladies, I just got home from watching Jarhead and let me encourage you to run, don't walk, to see this fine specimen of hot man ass. I'm talking full-frontal. Male, full-frontal. Nary a breast in sight, just naked men. I have always had a thing for men in combat boots and this movie did not disappoint. Before I went to see this movie, I didn't have much to write about, but I am just bursting with inspiration. Yum-my.

This brings me to a topic that Jenny suggested I mention: the double standard in movies concerning nudity. Boobs, boobs, and more boobs. Apparently, male movie stars only have butts and nothing in the front. Strategically placed plants, furniture and other props hide anything interesting to see in most movies. In all honesty, I have to admit that men are funny looking creatures, but I still think it is only fair to see just as much of men as we do of women. Truly, it is just a question of feminism...I swear. *wink, wink*

This surely puts into question the man sabbatical...must be strong...must hold out...

'Tis the Season?

I am not going to make the cliched statement that "Christmas seems to come sooner every year," but I have been seeing signs of the impending holidays. I did not have much holiday spirit last year partly because it was the first Christmas without my mom and I just wasn't feeling the whole "holiday thing."

Things are going to be different this year.

Thus, I have created a short list of Christmas Commandments (ahhh, a bit of a biblical theme if you will)

1. I will watch a minimum of 12 Christmas movies/specials - this should not be too difficult as I will be having my annual Christmas movie marathon - all are welcome to join me.
2. I will not succumb to my father's attempts to suck all of the Christmas spirit out of me.
2a. I will ignore his requests for either "nothing" or "Fig Newtons" for Christmas gifts.
2b. I will also ignore his repeated question "Don't you just hate Christmas?" as well as "Don't you just wish Christmas was already over?"
2c. I will insist on decorating the tree even thought it is a "waste of time" or "pointless."
3. I will actually appreciate the reason for the season and not obsess about finding the perfect gift for everyone. It really is the thought that counts (especially when you are this close to homeless).
4. I will be happy to be home and enjoy spending time with family.
5. Christmas is a magical time and I will remember this at all costs. Magical, I tell you!

Okay, enough commandments. I shall add to this list as I see necessary. So, do you love it or hate and are you own board with loving it this year? Come on...I know you have it in you.

I'm Back!!

That's right, give me a call tonight. I am in class right now so I will not be accepting calls at this time (the professor seems to get annoyed by this - whatever...), but I EXPECT people to call me tonight. Same number...Ahh, it is so good to be connected again!
